Dear Parents and Students,
This week at Coleman we focused on the safety and well being of our students. Our Student Services group led a presentation called Emotional App that addressed coping with stress and anxiety. Left unchecked, these issues can lead to more serious conditions, including depression and even thoughts of suicide. Each student was given an Emotional App brochure to bring home. I hope you had an opportunity to look through brochure with your child, as well as an open dialogue in regards to the presentation. We have received wonderful feedback from students and parents. Our guidance counselors and school psychologist are always available to help your children with any problems they encounter. Parents may also call the guidance department if they have any concerns about their kids.
At our PTSA general membership meeting last night, FBI Special Agent Stacy Aruda covered the dangers our children can fall victim to when online. Families learned about how simple it is for on-line predators to contact and establish relationships with young people as well as the steps we need to take to protect our kids' personal information. Agent Aruda also addressed cyberbullying and sexting, including the emotional impact and possible consequences students who participate in these activities may face. It is very important that parents always know what their kids are doing online, who they are friends with on facebook and who they chat with on Skype. As a parent, I know that the safety of my own children is paramount, and I feel the same way about every student here at Coleman. Agent Aruda will discuss cyber safety with our students as part of the Great American Teach-In later this fall.
On a more positive note, as part of a district-wide initiative to employ social media so that we can more easily communicate with families, Coleman Middle School is now on Twitter! Follow us @HCPSColemanMS to receive important notices in the event of an emergency as well as updates on school events.
Please remember that parental, community, and business participation is sincerely encouraged at Coleman Middle School. By working together we can accomplish anything. Our goal is the success of every child. If you have any concerns, please call Coleman at 872-5335.
Yours in Education,
Mike Hoskinson

I would like to thank our brand new Business Partners - Bay Point Urgent Care, Mathnasium and Rob Daisley Mediation. Without Business Partners like these and each of the others listed on the sidebar, we would not be able to fund the great programs for our teaches, students and staff. We still have a little way to go to meet our budget and we need your help. If you are interested in becoming a Business Partner, please click on the link below.

Thank you also to all of our Family Sponsors to date. We are off to

In celebration of our 50th Anniversary last year, Coleman Middle School enhanced the school front entrance with a pavered area that is a gateway for students, staff and visitors. This project created a beautiful, safe, and much needed usable space.
Now is your chance to dedicate a paver to your family or child, alumni member, business, student club/activity or favorite teacher or staff member. Please help the students and staff of Coleman Middle School by purchasing a Cobra Court Paver! Deadline for Fall Installation is September 28, 2012.

We want to thank the families that attended Inside Scoop, our first parent meeting of the year. We hope that many of your questions were answered and fears alleviated by attending this event. A big part of what makes Coleman such a great school is our parent involvement and we thank you for your support.
This week, all students participated in a program called Emotional App. The program was presented by the Student Services Team, comprised of guidance counselors, the school psychologist and school social worker. This program will be the topic at our first Parent Toolbox Lunch on October 12th. Each student received a brochure about the program - ask your child to share it with you.
On September 27th, we will host our Duke TIP information meeting for parents of selected 7th graders. 7th grade students are identified to participate in the Duke TIP Talent Search based on FCAT scores, or other standardized test scores if you are new to this school district. Parents of qualified students will be notified. If you are new to Coleman and feel your child may qualify for inclusion, please contact the guidance office. There will be two information sessions that evening, at 5:30 or 6:30 in the cafeteria. Visit www.tip.duke.edu to learn more about the Duke Tip Talent Search program.
Counselors are currently reviewing BETA applications and students who meet the criteria will be tapped for membership on Friday, September 21st. Tapping will take place during class; past Coleman BETA members will place a medallion around the necks of qualified students to signify the honor. The BETA induction ceremony will be held on Monday, October 1st at 6:00pm in the Gym. All families of inductees are invited to attend.
Please do not heistate to call or email us with any questions or concerns you may have.

My name is Jenny Quirke. I'm a sophomore at Plant and I've been bullied. When I was at Coleman myself I was bullied and got depressed. I felt so alone and nobody could understand what I was going through. It was a very bad time in my life. When I went to Plant I thought I was free from bullies but I was wrong. It took years but I found my voice and I'm putting it to use. Why Me? is an anti-bully program I developed that is starting here at Coleman. I will be talking to students who are being bullied and listen to them, listen to every word and give them advice, ideas on how they can stand up for themselves without directly confronting the bully. But I will most importantly be their friend because that's what's important. Frankly I'm just being the person I needed when I was bullied because I don't want another person to feel the way I did. I will be coming to Coleman the second and fourth Monday of every month starting October 8th. You can contact me through guidance or on twitter @WhyMe_Official. |
Attention Coleman Parents -there are many ways you can get involved during the school year by joining one or more of our active PTSA committees. Signing up is easy - just print out the volunteer form, indicate the committees that interest you and fit your time schedule, and then turn it in to the front office or your student's homeroom teacher. The Chairman of the committee will keep you informed and contact you when your help is needed. If you have any questions please contact Mary Ann Dellegatto, VP Volunteers. |
