As promised in the previous newsletter, we are continuing our conversation about the eight Pilates principles to educate you on the method, and to make your practice more mindful and efficient.
The first principle is fundamental when practicing Pilates: CONTROL. Control applies to your body's every movement during each exercise from start to end, through transitions between exercises, and to the overall attention to detail. When moving in a controlled manner, the muscles are conditioned to work not onlywhen they contract, but also when they lengthen, turning lean and flexible. In addition, when moving with control, smaller muscle groups called helpers or synergistis come more into play resulting in better balance and coordination.
By integrating those smaller muscle groups, big muscles do not have to work as hard anymore, and therefore will not become bulky. Developing control over your body movements in class will translate into the quality and safety of movements in your daily life from lifting your child from the floor and climbing up a ladder to running and dancing.
