ECISD considered Chapter 41 district |
|
ECISD learned it is now considered a Chapter 41 school district because of increased mineral wealth and rising home values in Odessa. Chapter 41 school districts are subject to "recapture" meaning they must pay "excess" local tax money back to the state; money that is then shared with school districts that are considered property poor. It is the system known as "Robin Hood." A number of West Texas school districts have been Chapter 41 districts for some time - Andrews, Seminole, and Rankin, for example. At this time, administrators do not know the exact financial impact this will have on ECISD. If you would like to read more about Chapter 41 school districts, this is the link to the TEA webpage -- http://www.tea.state.tx.us/index2.aspx?id=6796&menu_id=645. |

GT application date changes |
|
The traditional GT application period is changing. Usually held in January, the GT application period is now being moved to September for grades 1-11. The change is due in part to the testing that will have to be done for those who apply. |

Four schools receive youth literacy grant from Dollar General |
A local Dollar General store selected four of our elementary schools to receive a youth literacy grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation. Cameron, Noel, Pease and San Jacinto each received $2,500 to be used to promote literacy among its students. Store manager, Alisha Williams, and store employees at 1657 N. County Road West worked hard all year long in a fundraising effort to promote literacy--a major focus for the Dollar General Company. Alisha's store was the number one fundraising store in the entire company and employees were given the chance to select the schools they wanted to receive grants. The team raised $26,000 through BBQ, snowcone, candy apple and other food item sales. "We enjoy doing it. We wanted to give back to the community and to the people from the West Side who shop here so we decided to give it to the West Side schools". |
