Summer registration begins!

District-wide summer registration begins on Tuesday, July 31, but with one very big change for students at Odessa High School and Permian High School. In an effort to streamline the process and begin the transition to a fully on-line registration system, OHS and PHS will require summer registration for NEW STUDENTS ONLY. New students are those who were not attending an ECISD school at the end of last school year.

RETURNING students will be automatically registered at their home high school campus and will complete the registration process during the first couple of days of the school year in August. Returning students are those who were enrolled at OHS or PHS or in 9th grade at any ECISD junior high at the end of the last school year.

The details of this new process are available on the ECISD website, here.

Registration for Pre-Kindergarten and the year-round elementary school at Gale Pond/Alamo began on July 16.

Did you know...the only qualification for Pre-K registration is the child must be 4 years-old by September 1, 2012. Pre-K is free and there is no waiting list. Transportation is provided for those who qualify. This year Lamar Early Education Center and Carver Early Education Center will provide transportation for non-qualifying students on a first come, first serve basis. There will be 50 seats available for each campus for students who attend the afternoon session.

Education Foundation grant pushes GT

Three of ECISD's Gifted/Talented teachers and two of the members of the District's Advanced Academics Department attended one of the world's foremost conferences for gifted education, thanks to a grant funded by the Education Foundation.

Heather Bland and Eliseo Gomez, GT teachers at Reagan; Sylvia Garcia, GT teacher at Blackshear Magnet; and Omega Loera and Cindy Roman from the AAS Department recently returned from Confratute 2012, the international conference and institute on educating gifted and talented children and youth.

Now in its 35th consecutive year, Confratute is sponsored by the Neag Center for Gifted Education and Talent Development at the University of Connecticut. It is renowned because of the converging of prominent leaders in the field upon a single site for one week to interact and consult with teachers, administrators and parents eager to learn about exceptionally able youngsters - who they are, how they learn differently from other children, and what parents and school personnel need to do to help them develop their creative abilities and talents.

This year's conference was attended by more than 500 educators from 48 states and U.S. territories, Canada, Indonesia, New Zealand, Senegal, Jordan, Malaysia, and several European nations.
