OHS' new point of pride! | |

Students and staff at OHS have a new point of pride on campus - a newly remodeled horseshoe-shaped patio that was designed and built by students in the Horticulture program and partially funded by the Students in Philanthropy (SIP) class.
Melina Brito, a senior at OHS and SIP president, said the organization raises money for campus improvement projects every year. This year the SIP group collaborated with the Horticulture students to begin building the patio. They dug out all of the rocks and weeds, leveled the ground, and laid out concrete slabs. It took the horticulture students about six weeks to complete the project. Mr. Quintela, OHS principal, said he saw the kids working very hard even on the hot days. He said the function of the new patio is to be a place where everyone can spend time together and for teachers and students to gain inspiration. He said it's been well received by the kids, many of whom wanted to help.
The horticulture students also want to thank the District's grounds crew for their support throughout the project. Nathan Pettigrew, horticulture instructor, said they did an awesome job helping the kids with waterlines and anything else they needed. He said the grounds team made sure someone was there every day to help them. What a great example of team work!

The strapping young men you see in the photos below are part of Permian High School's Students in Philanthropy elective class (the lovely lady who is also part of the bottom photo is Jannine Meier Seymour the SIP Sponsor.)
In April the guys assembled benches that the class purchased for the courtyard area at PHS. The benches are made from recycled tires. Nice work!

First Year Teacher Academy |
Teaching is not an easy job and that first year in the classroom can be overwhelming. In addition to providing campus mentors for new teachers, ECISD offers a First Year Teacher Academy to any teachers who have less than one year of classroom experience. "There are lots of things presented here that I didn't think about," said Adam Cross, art teacher at Ector Junior High. Read more...
