ECISD to invest in new turf

Ratliff
Ratliff Stadium in a photo from 2006. The existing

turf was installed before the 2003 football season and has been used for football games, marching contests, track meets, and soccer games for the past nine years.

The extreme drought conditions have taken a heavy toll on the school district's junior high and high school practice and game fields. Most are already worn down to dirt and present safety concerns for our student-athletes and the extension of water restrictions means there is no substantial relief on the horizon. As district officials work on a long-term solution for the issue the Board of Trustees took the first step by approving $2 million dollars for new artificial turf at Ratliff Stadium and new artificial turf fields at Odessa High School and at Permian High School.

The turf at Ratliff Stadium now is going into its tenth season and has reached the end of its useful life.

The new all-weather, all-purpose turf fields at Odessa High School and Permian High School not only address safety issues for our kids but also save time and money in labor and upkeep as well as some three million gallons of water each year.

TAKS and STAAR/EOC preliminary results

The state released preliminary TAKS and STAAR/EOC (End of Course) results for high school students on May 22 & 23. Students who began high school prior to the 2011-2012 school year will continue to take TAKS tests through their graduation. Those results are below.

The last time the state changed accountability systems from TAAS to TAKS our scores dropped dramatically, however, that does not appear to be the case with these preliminary high school results. For instance:

  • Passing rates on the Geometry I End of Course exam ranged from a low of 87 to a high of 100
  • Passing rates on the Biology I End of Course exam ranged from a low of 73 to a high of 98
  • Passing rates on the Algebra I End of Course exam ranged from a low of 63 to a high of 87

In regard to the TAKS test:

  • Odessa High School 11th grade science results jumped 11 points
  • Permian High School 11th grade science results rose 7 points
  • Odessa High School 11th grade math results increased 7 points
  • Permian High School 11th grade math results are up 2 points
  • New Tech Odessa 10th grade students led the District in passing rates for English Language Arts (95%), social studies (97%), and math (70%)

May the odds be ever in your favor...

The incredibly popular books and move The Hunger Games is inspiring students here in ECISD.

The 6th-graders in Tabitha Rosales' class at Ireland Elementary got a huge treat on May 18 when they Skyped with Amandla Stenberg who played Rue in The Hunger Games film. Ms. Rosales purchased 40 copies of the book for her class through Scholastic because she could not keep up with the demand for her classroom copies. Unbeknownst to her, the purchases entered her into a drawing for this Skype session - which she won! She kept it a secret for a while but began dropping hints to her students, though she did not reveal which actor they would be talking to until this week.

The kids spent about 45 minutes talking to and asking questions of Ms. Stenberg, who is a 13-year old 8th-grader in California. She talked to the Ireland students about embarrassing things that happened to her during the filming of the movie; the pranks the actors played on each other; and how the mega-hit has changed her life. The students' attention stayed glued to the screen in the library the entire time. The whole conversation was recorded and all of the students will get a DVD copy. Very cool!
