ECISD announces changes for John B. Hood Junior High

HoodIn an effort to restore the community's confidence in John B. Hood Junior High School, and reestablish the school as an excellent option for any student, ECISD Superintendent of Schools Hector Mendez announced major changes that will be implemented at the school for the 2012-13 school year.

"This is something we as district leaders have discussed for some time," said Mr. Mendez. "This was not an easy decision to make but the status quo could not continue." Read more.

They just keep on giving
The Education Foundation's Grant Giveaway teams rolled through schools across the District this week awarding a record amount of money -- $180,000 -- to fund 60 grants for creative and innovative classroom projects. Since its inception in 2000 the Education Foundation has now awarded more than $1.2 million dollars in grants to ECISD educators!

In all 21 schools and two departments were awarded grants this year. A few of the highlights:

  • Ireland Elementary received the largest single grant this year, $13,000 for a mobile computer lab. The grant was given in honor of retired educator and former Education Foundation Board member Barbara Scribner.
  • Ector Junior High's Cheryl Sellers got four checks of her own and a fifth as part of a group! She is pictured with her checks and Superintendent of Schools Hector Mendez.

  • This was the first time Murry Fly Elementary had ever received a Foundation grant, and they received four of them. They were pretty excited about it!
  • Then there is Milam Elementary, an annual stop on the Grant Giveaway tour, posing with their 12 grant checks!

The support ECISD receives from the Education Foundation is truly remarkable!

First in line for laptops

The first five folks to complete the Laptops for Teachers training picked up their District-issued computers on Thursday, May 10.

In the picture at the bottom of the story from left to right they are Tabitha Rosales and Claudia Richards from Ireland Elementary, Sylvia Garcia from Blackshear Elementary, Phyllis Fortenberry of Burnet Elementary, and Travis Elementary's Elizabeth Oualline.

All five completed the 11 two-hour Technology Foundation courses in order to receive their laptop. The courses are offered to all ECISD teachers. The District began the Laptops for Teachers initiative as a means of support, and a way to increase flexibility, creativity, and convenience for teachers.

Ms. Rosales said she jumped at the chance to be more mobile in her classroom. "I teach sixth-grade science and I use a lot of Power Points," she said. "I feel like I'm stuck in a corner but now I can go to different part of the room."

Mrs. Richards wanted the laptop as a tool for her kids to use. "We have four computers and just 45 minutes per day for research. We need more hands on time for the kids."

Both agreed it will be very helpful to be able to take the laptop home and have all of the same programs that they use at school.

These celebrations serve to highlight just how many people have a daily influence on our students and our schools. Great work is being done each and every day and we appreciate their efforts on behalf of students. Keep up the good work!
