The New ECISD
District to examine a move to middle schools

On February 28, the ECISD Board of Trustees heard a report from a group of about a dozen business and community leaders asking the school district to take a serious look at moving to a middle school concept (which groups students in grades 6-8 on a campus and students in 9-12 on a high school campus) and away from the current junior high model (which groups students in grades 7-9 and 10-12). The committee also asked the Board to consider ways to even enrollment at all schools throughout Ector County to alleviate overcrowding at specific schools like Cavazos, Fly, and Jordan elementaries.

The report from this committee supports the recommendation from a larger strategic planning committee in 2008-09. Read more.

 Celebrating Seuss!

On March 2 Lamar Early Education Center celebrated what would have been Dr. Seuss's 108th birthday with a visit from the cat in the hat (school principal Tristan Specter) who read the book by the same title!

ECISD prepares next year's school calendar

Each year a committee of school district employees and community members creates two or three calendar options for the coming year that are then submitted to ECISD employees for a vote.

The voting process is underway right now; if you would like to see the two calendar options visit this link and click View Option A or View Option B. Voting is only open to district employees. The most favored option will be submitted to the Board of Trustees for approval on March 27.

National Merit Scholarship Finalists named

Congratulations go to Adam Vore and Charisma Desai from Odessa High School who were named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists earlier this year and found out a couple of weeks ago they had advanced to Finalist standing in the program. Only about 15,000 of the 1.5 million students who took the PSAT last spring are selected as Finalists. The designation means Adam and Charisma are still in the running for National Merit Scholarships to be offered in 2012.

In addition to Adam and Charisma, Michaela Anang, also from OHS - who was named a Commended Scholar in the NMS program - recently learned she is now a Finalist in National Merit Achievement program, which is a separate academic competition established in 1964 to provide recognition for outstanding Black American high school students. Only about 1,300 of more than 160,000 students earn the distinction of Finalist in the National Merit Achievement program.

 Dell Scholar semifinalist

OHS senior Brianna McDowell is a semifinalist in the very competitive Dell Scholars Program. She is an AVID student and has already been accepted to Texas A&M University.

The Dell Scholars Program is a scholarship program unique in the type of students it supports and how it fosters those students on their path to a college degree. An initiative of the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, the Dell Scholars Program provides its students with resources and mentoring beyond initial financial assistance to ensure they have the support they need to obtain a college degree. Big-time visitor to Noel Elementary

Marcus Cannon is 6' 5" tall and weighs 358 pounds; graduate of Odessa High School and All-Conference and All-American while at TCU; pro football offensive lineman with the New England Patriots. Big-time. Read the rest of the story.
