Schools celebrate 100th day of school
Elementary schools around the District celebrated the 100th day of school on February 6. There is some sort of magic to that day that makes some students and teacher age to 100 year old overnight! The students are from Dowling...the teachers in the second picture are Rachel Gladden Dunn, Yvette Stone Ramirez, Sororro Rodriguez, Sylvia Gonzalez and Erin Manuz from Blackshear. |

February 1 was National Signing Day for football and many other sports - the day when high-schoolers from around the country sign letters-of-intent to play at the college of their choice. Four of our ECISD student-athletes earned scholarship offers.
This year, all four happened to come from Permian High School. In the montage below, starting at the top left and going clockwise, you see:

1. Jamia Graham, who signed with the University of Texas at Arlington for track & field and cross country.

2. Van Powell, who signed to play football at West Texas A&M.
3. Kacey Ryan, who will also play football at West Texas A&M.
4. Haesten Wood, who signed with Southern Nazarene to play football.

The links below the names take you to the newspaper article about the signings - all three of the football boys are recognized in the single article. Congratulations to these student-athletes, their families, and their teachers! |
Former OHS student and coach, Hayden Fry, honored |
Hayden Fry, who played on the Odessa High School state championship football team in 1946 and then coached the Bronchos football team from 1956-58, was given the Lifetime Achievement Award at a ceremony in Houston in January. Coach Fry went on to a long and distinguished career in college football - which you can read about at this link http://www.bryantawards.com/about/lifetime-achievement-award/. Each January the American Heart Association presents a former coach with the Lifetime Achievement Award as well as presenting the Bear Bryant Award to the coach of the year in college football.
In the picture, Hayden Fry (left) receives the award from Jerry Levias, one of Coach Fry's former players and the first African-American to receive an academic scholarship in the Southwest Conference. |

ECISD Board of Trustees works to improve teaching and learning
Over the past year, the Ector County Independent School District (ECISD) School Board has been on a journey. The journey has come at an ideal time. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) has raised the bar by introducing Texas' new state test, the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR), which will go live in 2012 for current 9th grade students. Read on.

School Counseling Week |
February 6-10 is National School Counseling Week and the perfect time to focus public attention on the unique contribution of our professional counselors and how students' lives are different as a result of what school counselors do. From helping students achieve in school to forming a plan for college or a career, school counselors examine a students' abilities, strengths, interests, and talents. Counselors work with parents, local businesses, and community agencies all in the name of helping kids realize their potential and set healthy, realistic, and optimistic goals for themselves.
ECISD counselors were honored with a reception and staff development session on the afternoon of February 8 and their work will be recognized during the regular Board of Trustees meeting on February 21. Please take a moment to thank your school counselors for all they do! |
