ECISD's new initiatives - what are CSCOPE, Eduphoria and Professional Learning Communities?

The ECISD mission is focused on students. Preparing our kids for college and careers is the top priority. Research shows high-performing school districts have a clearly defined plan for what to teach; a reliable means for measuring whether or not students are learning the concepts; and a structured plan to advance fast learners as well as help students who are struggling. World Class Leader in Education Award

Each month during the school year ECISD chooses a World Class Leader in Education from nominations it receives.

The World Class Leader in Education for January 2012 is Scott Houston, assistant principal at Ireland Elementary School. And his is quite a story.

Mr. Houston is a six-year veteran of ECISD; a former Odessa High School teacher and assistant coach. This year he began a new job, that of assistant principal at Ireland Elementary and volunteered to be trained as one of the school's first responders.

During lunch duty during the first week of January 10-year old Manual Ramos approached Mr. Houston but was unable to speak or breathe - he was choking. Mr. Houston delivered a series of back blows on Manual but it didn't help; he then applied the Heimlich maneuver and out popped a nacho chip!

Mr. Houston took the action in stride saying, "That's why we do the training; that's why we learn CPR."

But we know it is a bigger deal than that and so does Manual.

"I couldn't breathe. It was very scary," he said. "I was thinking, 'is this the end of me? Am I going to die young?'"

For his work as a teacher, coach, and assistant principal plus his life-saving action during that lunch period ECISD is proud to name Scott Houston its World Class Leader in Education award winner for January.

All-state musicians
PHS all state

ECISD is proud to recognize eight of its students who recently earned Texas Music Educator Association All-State honors in band and choir. They are:

Jonathan Ortiz - Odessa High School band

Casey Brito - Permian High School band

Andrew Gonzales - Permian High School band

Ashley Allen - Permian High School band

Kaitlyn Tucker - Permian High School choir

Kirsten Pankey - Permian High School choir

Jordan Beall - Permian High School choir

Paul Gore - Permian High School choir

TMEA All-State selections are made through a multi-step audition process, and these students will perform as part of All-State ensembles at the close of the TMEA Clinic/Convention in early February. This year 62,580 Texas high school students entered the all-state process, with only 1,594 students - that's 2.5% -- chosen as All-State musicians.

"This is a tremendous honor," said executive director for fine arts Shawn Bell. "We congratulate our students and directors on a job well done!"
