School Board Recognition Month - Helping Our Kids Shine

BOARD

January is School Board Recognition Month in Texas and we want to call attention to the work done by our Board of Trustees. The time spent in board meetings represents just a small fraction of the hours school board members devote to their jobs. They work hard at seminars and training sessions to keep abreast of the latest changes in state and federal regulations and learn trends in educational leadership. They also are deeply involved in community activities, and spend many hours in the schools and at extracurricular events. Their love of learning and concern and caring for students, staff, and the community drive board members' desire to ensure every student can succeed. Their job entails an endless string of meetings and school functions to attend; reams of reports, agendas, proposals, and other information to read and study; and a host of difficult decisions to make. Board members must pull together as a team toward a common goal-helping our students achieve. While they may individually disagree on certain issues, their role as a board is to consistently strive toward excellence.

In Ector County, our Trustees are ultimately responsible for a budget of approximately $184 million, 28,000 students, 3,400 employees, and 38 schools. Over the past year they have spent considerable time establishing a vision for our education program, and designing the structure to achieve that vision. Under their watch ECISD has settled the decades old desegregation lawsuit, crafted a new definition of diversity that will guide our enrollment in this new era of Unitary status, took a step toward the future by establishing New Tech Odessa and its culture of project-based learning, and led the push for a managed curriculum, a comprehensive data system, and a collaborative network for teachers - all of which are crucial for strong teaching and learning.

Please take a moment or two to say "thank you" to our Trustees!

Reagan earns a spot on the honor roll

REAGAN

For the 9th year in a row the Elementary Magnet at Reagan earned a spot on the prestigious Texas Business & Education Coalition Honor Roll. In fact, Reagan Elementary was on the only school from Region 18 to make the list (the school's faculty is pictured below.)

The TBEC Honor Roll recognizes sustained, academic excellence; schools on the list have demonstrated three years of consistent, high performance in all subjects compared to other schools serving similar student populations. TBEC Honor Roll schools have the highest percentage of students performing at the state's most rigorous standard - commended - in every subject.

Reagan principal Andrea Martin and ECISD assistant superintendent of elementary operations Wendy Hines attended an awards ceremony in Dallas on December 2.

According to its website, TBEC was formed by Texas business leaders to engage with educators in a long-term effort to improve public education in Texas.

Laying the foundation of support for our schools!

The Education Foundation provides tremendous support for ECISD teachers and students. Founded in 2000, each year the Foundation awards grant money for innovative projects and activities that enhance student learning. As of spring 2011 the Foundation has given out more than $100,000 in grant money!

The Foundation also:

  • Provides scholarship money for ECISD graduates - a total of $50,000 at Odessa College and the University of Texas of the Permian Basin available now
  • Pays for dual-credit courses for junior and seniors in AVID
  • Sponsors the annual AVID celebration
  • Awards laptop computers to selected AVID students
  • Members serve as mentors to AVID students

The Education Foundation also invited elementary students from across the District to design the Christmas card that it sends to the board's friends and supporters. There were several entries and selecting a winner was difficult; in fact, Foundation members wound up picking two designs - they are pictured below along with the artists!
