Piano Tips, Tricks, and Trivia!
Tip:  Why is it so hard to play a scale with
with both hands together?  How do I make
    this easier?
    Child hands piano
You'll feel like both hands are doing the same thing if you play in opposite directions: try putting both thumbs on the same note, and then play the left hand scale down and the right hand scale up. Now you can get used to it while using the same fingers of each hand together.

Trick:  How do I motivate myself or my child to work harder at practicing?

There is no better way to "jump-start" yourself or the kids than going to see some live music!  Sometimes the cure for a musical 'slump' is seeing a performer right in front of you - we call this the "Boy, I wish I could do that" effect.  Invite someone you know over for a good meal and bribe them to play for you and your family - the lessons alone aren't nearly enough exposure.

Trivia:
  The 11th Finger

"At an evening party, Mozart bet a case of champagne that Haydn could not play at sight a piece he had composed that afternoon. Haydn accepted the bet and proceeded to play it on harpsichord only to stop short after first few bars. It was impossible to continue because the composition required him to simultaneously strike notes at two ends of the keyboard and a note in the very center. Haydn exclaimed, 'Nobody can play this with only two hands.'

'I can,' Mozart said, and took his place at the keyboard. When he reached that problematic portion of his piece, Mozart bent forward and struck the central note with his nose.

Haydn conceded saying: 'With a nose like yours, it becomes easier.'"
