Piano Tips, Tricks, and Trivia!
Tip:  How do I get myself to practice when
             I don't feel like it?Dad plays grand
Take a list of six things you're working on (example: two exercises, two scales, and two songs).  Then set a kitchen timer for five minutes, and do six things for five minutes each.  The 30 minutes will go by amazingly fast, and you'll feel like you've really accomplished something!

CGP1000   Trick:  Yes, but how do I get my kid to practice when
                THEY don't want to?

First, ban the use of the word "practice" in your house.  It's time to play the piano!
Next, when your child least expects it, sit down and start trying to play their assignment.  If you play pretty well, make lots of mistakes.  If you don't play, sit in on a couple of lessons and learn enough to start struggling through their song.  A normal kid will take great glee in your poor playing, and can be persuaded to sit down with you and help you out!

Square GrandTrivia:  The Great Piano Fire of 1904

Have you ever seen a "Square Grand" piano?  These were popular from before the Civil War to the turn of the century, mainly because they were easier to place in a room than a grand piano, and because they were cheaper.  Manufacturers began building mass-produced, low-quality square grands which had poor design and tuning problems.  (These pianos show up regularly on eBay and Craigslist as antique "treasures" at high prices - most cannot be restored enough to sound good or stay in tune!)

As the modern upright pianos with much better touch and sound had become established as the new standard, the piano industry staged an unprecedented event in Atlanta, Georgia, making a giant pile of square pianos and setting it on fire

What is a digital baby grand piano?

A lot of us "wanna be" piano players are dreaming of that beautiful baby grand!  What's stopping us from getting one?  The answer is usually space, or the fear that the piano is too loud, or the cost of maintaining it is too high, or maybe just that a baby grand piano is too expensive!  Pianists all over the world who live in small apartments and condominiums need an instrument that is smaller, can be played with headphones, never needs tuning, and costs thousands or even tens of thousands less than a traditional piano.  Some of these amazing pianos even teach you to play!
