Summer 2012                                           Smile - sunshine is good for your teeth!
Greetings!

Summertime!  The season of vacations, no school for the kiddos, picnics, hot days spent at the beach or on the river or just doing what you love most. It seems like it goes by way to fast for most people. The long days boost our spirits. We want to do more, see more, smile more.

Smile more!  Why not?

Mark Stibich PhD gives us 10 reasons why smiling is so good for us:

1 Smiling is ATTRACTIVE

2 Smiling changes our mood

3 Smiling is contagious

4 Smiling RELIEVES STRESS

5 Smiling boosts your immune system

6 Smiling lowers your blood pressure

7 Smiling releases endorphins, natural pain killers and serotonin

8 Smiling lifts the face and MAKES YOU LOOK YOUNGER

9 Smiling make you seem successful

10 Smiling helps you stay POSITIVE

My choice of dentistry as a career was not to drill, drill, drill, it was to help people have the beautiful, healthy smile of their dreams. That is why I stress the importance of preventative care to all my patients and friends. It is also the driving force behind constantly improving through education and technology so we at Delmarva Dental Services can provide the best possible care for our patients. Whether you just want to maintain your current smile, keeping it as healthy as possible or you want to "upgrade" it to a dazzling, new smile, we are ready to take care of you.

Is the rumor true?

Do dental x-rays really cause brain tumors?

As of this date, there is no definitive proof that x-rays cause brain tumors known as meningiomas. The study that came to this conclusion asked people to recall from memory all the dental x-rays they had in their lifetime. (I can't remember what I had for dinner 3 days ago much less how many x-rays I had 30 years ago!) This can be and is very inaccurate. So why all the buzz if it has not been proven? The media tends to focus on the sensational or stories that shock and frighten people. For example, you may recall a few years ago when it was all over the news that cell phones caused brain cancer. Most of us remember that. Was that true? The National Cancer Institute has said: "Studies thus far have not shown a consistent link between cell phone use and cancers of the brain, nerves, or other tissues of the head or neck." Likewise, Otis W. Brawley, M.D., chief medical officer of the American Cancer Society said, "We need more data before we can even begin to state there is a relationship between dental x-rays and these tumors".

We at Delmarva Dental Services take your health and safety very seriously. We use every precaution to avoid exposing anyone any more than necessary and take x-rays only when necessary. We also have the latest digital equipment that uses less radiation. For more info about this subject along with a comprehensive table that compares dental x-rays with other things around us, visit our website and look at all the articles in our x-ray section Did you know that you get exposed to 380 times more radiation just breathing than you do with 1 FULL set of dental x-rays? Check out the Radiation Table for more.

 E-mail is great!

(most of the time)  It is a great way to stay in touch, receive important information such as this newsletter and appointment confirmations.

It does have it limitations however. It is not monitored constantly so if you cancel an appointment you have the next morning, late the night before, it may not be checked until your appointment time has passed. It is also difficult to reschedule an appointment using email. It is better to talk to us in person to reschedule so that we can search for a time that is good for you with the provider you prefer.

When you get our confirmation email, please confirm. If you need to cancel and reschedule, please call our office at 410-742-3000.  Thank You!

Someone once said, "Every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person , a beautiful thing".

The summer months just seem to fly by and before we know it we are getting the kids ready for back to school, sports, extracurricular activities and so many other things. Don't forget to take time out for you and your family to get your dental checkups done if you are due. Keep your smile bright and happy and find out just how true the list of 10 at the top of this letter really is.
