* Appreciate * Enourage * Learn *

The theme from our September Coordinator Training in Yakima. And we did appreciate one another!! It was a great time and thank you to our wonderful hostesses at Yakima Parent to Parent and Children's Village/Memorial Hospital, and to Susan Ray/Department of Health/CSHCN for helping to fund our training and Lyn and Lawrie for braving the pass closures to help facilitate. We all learned alot and will be sharing this with you this year.

Congrats to Jamie Coonts, Snohomish Arc/P2P as the winner of the Bake Off with pumpkin bars that were so yummy. And to Karlene from Whatcom P2P and Charlene from Grays Harbor Arc/P2P for their close winning entries. All the cookies made our afternoon break a real "treat".

Have a good October and enjoy this wonderful Fall.

Glee Adds Another Character with I/DD

One of The Arc's (US) favorite actresses, Lauren Potter who has Down syndrome, is about to get a new cast mate with I/DD. Lauren plays cheerleader Becky on the hit TV show Glee, who is coached by Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch). Last year, Sue's story line included the death of her sister, Jean who was played by another of our favorite actresses, Robin Trocki who has I/DD. (Don't worry, Robin is very much alive - just her character is gone). In last week's episode, we find out that Sue's new baby has Down syndrome, and was sweetly named Robin, in honor of Robin Trocki. The Arc applauds the producers of Glee for featuring characters with I/DD so prominently in their series.

From DisabilitiesAtWork.org - October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month. Let's honor the companies that go above and beyond in their hiring practices of people with disabilities by endorsing them through the Disabilities At Work consumer advocacy campaign. From Susan: "I honor Starbucks and Applebees - they hire people with disabilities, including our daughter Alexa."

Smart911 - Check out the Smart911 System. You can create a free Safety Profile for your child or Senior Citizen so that First Responders have important health information in advance of a 911 call.
