Kick Start Your New Year!
Ah, the New Year. Starting promptly on Janurary 1, the feasting is done, and the Jason Jilg Photograph is hanging on your wall, and now we begin to bring our goals, dreams, and ambitions to the forefront of our daily living.
I came across the site Kickstarter awhile back. This site is by invitation only for designers, writers, artists, and musicians to draft a project, and get their fans, customers, and the general public involved in the whole process. By posting a project, and your needs, you have the chance to get people to make pledges to help bring your project to reality, and in return you give them something for their help and generosity. If you don't reach your goal, however, then no one has to do anything. It is an all or nothing system.
I was recently invited to post my new project, Spring-Fed. Spring-Fed is a photography project to photograph Nebraska's rivers and reservoirs.
Nebraska and water are generally not thought of together, but Nebraska has more miles of rivers than any of the other Lower 48 states. 23,000 miles to be exact. From the Platte to the Plum these water resources have a huge impact on our ecosystems, economy, and recreation. My aim is to capture the beauty of one of the greatest water resources in the United States.
You can read a complete description here, but don't forget to help by pledging, and you'll get a great gift in return!!!
The best thing about Kickstarter, however, is that once you are invited to post a project you get 5 invitations to give out to others with great ideas that could use a little help to make the project a reality.
So if you have a book you want to write, an album to produce, or a design for a better product here is your chance. Don't be shy; send me a draft of your idea. I'll post your idea on my blog (without your name), and let the public vote on who will get the invitations!
You never know, it might just be the chance you need to Kick Start your New Year!!

Preserving for the Future
I was recently commissioned to photograph some historic barns for a Central Nebraska family. While out there in the early morning light, I began to ponder the history of storytelling, and the impact it leaves on our children, grandchildren, and beyond. As humans we have not evolved much in our basic historic preservation and storytelling method of choice. We started out using Petroglyphs to tell our history and stories to future generations. To this day we continue preserving our history and traditions for future generations through the visual image, the photograph. To me the visual image is more concrete and democratic than writing for preserving our history for all future generations to ponder, and come to their own personal conclusions.
Whether you choose to use your own snapshots, or a professional photographer to document your history it can be one of the most important and treasured items you leave your family for generations to come. |

Buying Art-What is it that you Like?
The art world can be a large and intimidating world. Most of us are not patrons of a large art museum, or are we invited to dozens of gallery openings each year.
The first step in purchasing and collecting art is to define what it is you like. What types of work move you and capture your attention?
To start with, ask yourself these questions without thought of actual pieces of art.
- Black and White or Color?
- Traditional or Abstract?
- Clean, Light, and Pure or Dark, Rough, and Raw?
- Historic or Contemporary?
- 2D or 3D?
My wife and I buy one-of-a-kind pottery at art fairs, I enjoy the photographic work of Michael Kenna and collect his books and small prints, and we like the limited edition paintings and illustration work of Sara McKenzie, Ann Toebbe, and Mark Ulriksen (love our large edition of Monk!).
I have a friend that collects western themed photographs and paintings for his office and home. He enjoys the photographs of the western landscape, and the rugged, independent, self motiving story behind western themed paintings.
As you can see each of us has our own likes and styles, but to start with you have to take the large area of art collecting and narrow it down into a managable piece by definging what it is you like as a starting point.
I highly recommend than that each of you write a list of 10 words that describe art you are most drawn to. This will save you many hours of wasted and frustrated time in the future.
In the next issue, after you have given some thought to what you like, I will go over how to start finding good resources for locating pieces you want to collect! | |
