Editor's Message - Buzzy Gedro's Thoughts on Living a Long and Happy Life... |
 |
Julie Gedro
|
Hello there! My Mom thought it would be a good idea for me to write the Editor's message this month so that I could share some of my thoughts about living well. I turned 14 on June 10th, and I am going strong. Aside from a bit of hearing loss (which comes in handy when my Mom is having a long winded conversation that holds no interest for me) and a touch of arthritis, I assure you that I am alive and well. I get asked lots of times for my secrets to a long and happy life and I am privileged to share a few of my thoughts. 1 Know yourself, and be true to yourself. It is impossible for me to overstate the importance of self-awareness. I am happy being a small breed dog who lives a serene, comfortable life. When I was a puppy, I thought it might be cool to be a German Shepherd (they command respect) or a cat (they get to lounge about all day and play with catnip). However, in my early adulthood, I realized that I was born to be me. My tail is docked a bit long, and my markings are not "breed standard." That is totally good with me. I know who I am. 2. Live right. This is fundamental to a long and good life. I eat right, I get a good night's sleep (and plenty of daytime naps with my brothers), and I get lots of exercise. 3. Establish and maintain positive relationships. I have friends in a variety of contexts, and I have learned to be consistently affectionate with my friends and my family. When I first moved to Syracuse, there was a beautiful little girl Yorkie named Sarah, who I instantly disliked. She disliked me more. We got into a fight the first time we met, and took a piece out of each other. We got over our initial problems, and are now the best of friends. Every time I walk by her house, she begs her Dad to come out and see me. We love each other, and cannot even remember why we fought in the first place. 4. When you make a mistake, fix it. I travel light. This means that I make amends when I growl at my brothers, or when I cross the line of being demanding with my Mom, or when I am excessively wiggly on the groomer's table. I live unencumbered by the weight of guilt. 5. Accept people, places and things just like they are and not how you want them to be. I would likely enjoy being an only dog, particularly at my age. I like to be left alone unless it is time to eat or to play. I live, instead, with two energetic younger brothers who keep the vibration in my house at a higher level that I would prefer. However, I understand that my Mom is invested in the work of Yorkie Rescue, and I accept that commitment as a family affair. There is a difference between interest and commitment, and at this house, we are all in. 6. Feel your feelings. When my brother Max passed away, I thought that he was on a doggie sabbatical or something. It did not occur to me until weeks passed, that he was not coming back. I sank into a deep depression that lasted for quite some time. I eventually felt better, and I know that he watches over me and wants me to be happy as long as I am on this earth. Truly, I do believe that he will greet me at the Rainbow Bridge when my time comes. 7. Be brave. I think it takes more energy to be a wimp than it does to be courageous. When I am at the doctor, my Mom is routinely told what a good patient I am. 8. Take Risks. I love the lyrics to Lee Ann Womack's song "I Hope You Dance:" I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance, Never settle for the path of least resistance Livin' might mean takin' chances, but they're worth takin... Give the heavens above more than just a passing glance And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance, I hope you dance. 9. Be true to your word. I know what you are thinking right now. "I was willing to believe that these tips were written or channeled by a dog, but this one is silly." Hold on now, dear reader. I am entirely capable of communicating my intent. When I need to go out, I let my Mom know. When I want to walk in a particular direction because I feel the energy is good, I let my Mom know and I tend to be right. When I curl my lips at my brother Nick because he is bullying our littlest brother, Nick (who is much bigger than me) backs right off. I am a dog of my word. 10. Take responsibilities seriously, but overall, don't take life too seriously. My Mom wrote a dedication to me in her Doctoral dissertation ("Urban Cowgirls," 2000, University of Georgia), acknowledgements that says: Buzz, you have been my comic relief, reminding me that life can be as simple as a walk in the park. You continually teach me how to rock along the sidewalk of life. May you enjoy your life! Buzzy

Yorkie Times Spotlight ~ Loree Jordan-Macias
|
This month's Volunteer in the Spotlight is Loree Jordan-Macias.
Loree has been volunteering for YTNR in northern California for three years, but has been a lifelong dog lover. Her son recounted a story from when he was younger, of how the family car was loaded down for a road trip to Grandma's, when Loree spotted 2 obviously stray dogs. Loree stopped the car, picked them up, and they all went off for the visit. She has also made items for fundraisers in addition to fostering Yorkies.

Tell us about yourself. Where do you live? Interests? Hobbies? Family?
~ I am a married author and grandmother of 4 living with my husband Frankie in the Bay Area in Northern Ca. I am a full-time caregiver for William a wonderful 67 yr old. disabled man who lives with us and our yorkie babies. Between 4 grandchildren, Alyssa, Breyden, Raquel and Austin, taking care of William full-time and being a YTNR foster mom my life is very busy. I am a very creative person I have authored 4 books in the last several years but also love creating one of a kind rhinestone vintage shabby chic jackets/items for sale and for YTNR for fundraising. One of my biggest interests in life has been and will always be animals. I have always been bringing home lost animals since i could practically walk. I grew up in the country and I was riding horses by age 8, helped my mother raise Lhasa Apso's, raised sheep for the 4-H, at one point had a spider monkey for a pet and the list goes on....
How did you become interested in Yorkies?
~ In 1991 I founded my own rescue group Pet Friends and Rescue. It was love at first sight when I saw my first yorkie female shivering in the cold on that October morning during a routine shelter rescue mission. This little girl, Ms. Wookie touched my heart the moment I laid eyes on her. We became inseparable from that moment on until she passed 13 years later in my arms. I love dogs and also had an Aussie, Bridgadoon but became die-hard yorkie after Ms. Wookie stole my heart so many years ago.
How and when did you get involved in Yorkshire Terrier National Rescue?
~ I got involved with YTNR about 2 and a half years ago while looking to adopt a yorkie. Since I was always helping with dogs anyway it was just a given that I would become a foster mom for Yorkshire Terrier National Rescue.
Tell us about your Yorkies. What are their ages, names, hobbies?
~ We have 2 yorkies Syndey Rose 4, Lacey Rose 4, and a foster Chaz 5, in the process of our adoption. They all have one hobby... squirrel patrol! We have a huge backyard with lots of trees and squirrels and these dogs are in heaven. We also have had a pesty skunk that has shown up in the yard at night and the dogs have gotten "skunked" unexpectdly during their last nightly potty before bed. Whew bathing a "skunked" ticked off yorkie late at night would not be on the top of my "fun list" believe me. But as a yorkie mom you gotta do what you gotta do!
What do you love about Yorkshire Terrier National Rescue? ~ The absolute dedication to this wonderful Yorkie bred. There are many wonderful people that I have met in this organization that are truly putting the welfare of these little yorkie babies in the best of care.
What else would you like us to know? ~ I love working with YTNR! My husband and I love being with our Yorkies so much we are starting a doggie day care & pet sitting endeavor for toy breeds to help other pet owners with their little ones. I am blessed to be a YTNR foster mom and surrounded with such wonderful doggie souls!
Thank you Loree for doing so much for these little dogs and for being such a dedicated volunteer for Yorkshire Terrier National Rescue. We truly appreciate all of your efforts, we couldn't do it without people like you who share our love for these adorable little dogs. Sincerely, MaryElizabeth

Dear All, I have been in Afghanistan since May 4th. My address is :
COL Pam Mindt
1972d MED DET (CSC)
KAF
APO, AE 09355
Hi everyone, I was catching up on emails and had a chance to talk with Hannelie this morning. The Medical Detachment I command covers eight fixed sites in Afghanistan. Each site has additional locations they cover so there are many moving parts to providing services. I travel a lot and at times am unable to write. I appreciate everyone's thoughts and prayers as those of us in Afghanistan serve in harm's way. I will send pictures of the dogs that have received care packages from individuals in the United States to include many from Yorkie Spice. Thank you and you should be receiving thank you notes in the mail.
Hannelie is keeping the home fires burning and that is no small task. With seven dogs, five cats, three llamas, and two horses there are chores to be done. In addition, she is tending the gardens and the yard!
I attached a picture of the Detachment Sergeant, SSG Ayers and myself. We were clowning around at a recent promotion party.
Thanks again for all that you do for the four leggeds and me.
Pam

Photographing your pet...
|
Tips for Photographing your pets and adoptable Yorkies.Make your Primary Photo a close up head shot, make sure it's not blurry and try to get your pet to look into the camera lens that will draw in the person looking at the photo.
When you are choosing a setting make sure that it isn't a cluttered background so if you are in the house you can use a neutral colored sheet as a backdrop light or dark in color depending on the color of the animal you are photographing.
Use your camera's zoom feature to crop out as much as you can and make the pet the main focus of the picture.
If you take your pet outside and set him/her on a table or chair or in front of a basket of flowers, you can take advantage of natural light and most often the scene in backgkround is of nature which is very complimentary. Avoid using flash as it can be frightening and also cause red eye that has to be removed later.
Try to get your pet to look into the camera by getting his/her attention with a squeaky toy or by making funny sounds with your voice. Eye contact really helps connect pets with people looking for a pet to adopt.
You can take multiple pictures along with the head shot , a full body shot of your pet playing with a toy or sitting on your lap all of these help to show off the pets own personality.
Digital camera's have made picture taking so much more fun and affordable so you don't have to wait for the prints but can look through and delete those you won't be using and keeping the ones that are fantastic.

 Mary-Margaret O'Brien ~ Friends are Forever!
|
Feral cats - gone. Gophers - gone. Rat - gone!
It was getting a little boring in my back yard for a while there. But now I have BUNNY RABBITS with fluffy little white cotton tails. Sometimes they come over to my house to munch on the clover that's growing in my back lawn. They hop through the wrought iron fence along the back border and even kick back a bit, just enjoying their moment.
Nobody has stayed long enough for me to get to know them on a first-name basis yet. Just about the same time I hop through my personal door to introduce myself, they hop through the fence and disappear.
I race over to the fence and stand on my tippy-toes trying to see where they went. I'm pretty sure they live on the slope between my yard and the road. I sure hope they don't try to cross the street without looking both ways. My good friend Pooka who lives next door says they come visit him, too.
If these bunny rabbits are anything like Magnolia Blossom or the Woolies, I'll have hundreds of friends in no time at all. Isn't that great!!??
I wonder if they'll let me mentor them like I did the kids at Puppy School? I could work on socializing and showing them good manners and maybe even work on their language skills. Doglish is pretty basic. I'll try to get them to sit still long enough for a snapshot so I can share with you. They hop pretty fast, though.
OHHHH...and my very good friend MaryAnn who used to work down the hall came to visit me yesterday. I haven't seen her for a couple of years but the minute she opened the door to my office I ran right over to her, with my whole rear end wagging a mile a minute. She knows exactly what I like. Friends really are forever!
(ahem??)
Forever in my heart and soul - You're my friend, you make me whole!!
(Original poem by MEEE...Mary-Margaret O'Brien)
Love always...
Mary-Margaret

Tellington Touch
|
When Darby's off and on limp became more on than off, her guardian, Sandra, took her to see the vet. Darby, age 7, was diagnosed with stage 4 luxating patellas, aka slipping kneecaps. The veterinarian strongly suggested surgery, a costly procedure with a long, difficult recovery period. A second opinion yielded the same results.
Sandra was distraught. She adored Darby, and took her responsibilities to care for her dog very seriously. Still, her circumstances at that moment were such that she could neither afford the surgery nor provide the carefully supervised recovery period necessary for Darby to heal. By the time a mutual friend recommended she call me, Sandra was an emotional mess. Riddled with guilt, she tearfully explained her situation. She knew very little about Tellington TTouch. Could I help?
I told her the truth, that I had never worked with luxating patellas, and did not know how much I could help. And even though my fees were much less than the veterinarian's, Sandra really could not afford me, either. My heart quickly took over, and, partly motivated by what Darby could teach me, I made Sandra an offer that paid for my gas and provided Darby with ongoing TT sessions.
We began immediately with two TT sessions per week. At first Darby was anxious about me TTouching her painful knees, so I worked softly on areas of her small body that did not hurt. In a few minutes, she began to relax. In a few more minutes, her eyes softened and her breathing slowed. At that point, I began to slowly TTouch one rear leg, making each small, clockwise circle closer to her knee than the one before. First Darby yawned, a clue that TT is releasing pain or tension. Then she exhaled deeply. I continued with Raccoon Touches all over and around her knee. Her eyes closed. I began to TTouch what I could reach of her other knee, then s.l.o.w.l.y turned her over to fully reach her other side.
In the days after our first session, Darby still limped, but Sandra reported her spirits were better, as was her appetite. The second session went well. Darby relaxed in just moments, and actually sighed when I Ttouched her knee for the first time. When I returned for the third session, Sandra greeted me with a huge smile and a hug. Darby had hardly limped at all in the days since her last treatment. She continued to improve, and we agreed I would come only once a week. At the end of two months, Darby appeared sound. She had not limped for weeks, and did not seem to be in pain. Of course, we cannot always recognize pain simply by observation. And with this condition, a dog can have serious setbacks simply from actively playing.
I was excited when Sandra decided to take Darby for a recheck, eager to know what changes he would find, if any. Only when the veterinarian reported Darby's luxating pattelas were no longer stage 4, but instead, stage 2, did Sandra tell him about our TT sessions. To her surprise and delight, he wanted to know more about TTouch! Eventually, he sent members of his staff to TT workshops, and began including TT in his practice. :)
Darby lived well and happily for another six years. Sandra provided her beloved dog increasingly better nutrition. She also learned some TTouch basics and used those skills on Darby on a regular basis. Every three months, I would visit them and do a session. Sandra's circumstances improved, and even though she was eventually able to afford the surgery, she felt Darby's quality of life and physical comfort was such that surgery was not necessary. The vet agreed.
Arthritis is very often a result of slipping kneecaps, but Darby had little arthritis, if any. Regular TTouch contributed to that, as did excellent nutrition.
Working with Darby was an incredible gift to me, bringing me a deeper realization about the healing potential of Tellington TTouch. Also, one of my goals is to help animal caregivers become empowered with TT skills to use for their animals and for themselves, and Sandra was a willing candidate. I am grateful to be able to use my hands to release pain and facilitate healing in other beings.
DISCLAIMER: This is a story about the healing power of Tellington TTouch. TT does not replace veterinary care.

Rick Caran & Jilli Dog

Two Generations of YTNR Goodwill Ambassadors Hello to all our wonderful YTNR family! We are having such a great year, and we hope to see some of you at various events. It looks like summer is officially here on Long Island, as the temperatures are going to the 90's; all the pups will be resting in the a/c today.
My good pal (and yours), Julie Gedro asked me if I could do an in-home interview for a prospective adopter in nearby Brooklyn, and I am thrilled to take part as this is new to me! The phone interview went great. The adopter seems to be just like the rest of us - totally in love with Yorkies - and she seems to be a good responsible person. I will do the in-person on Monday, and will get back to YTNR with the results.
I enclosed a few pictures of Team Jilli Dog's recent appearance at the Stepping Stones Children's Museum in Norwalk, CT. It was a great day. I particularly love to see the childrens' faces in the crowds, but I also get a kick out of the parents and adults who also love to see the pups do their thing! Stepping Stones is one of the top five children's museums in the US, and we are in talks about appearing at the others as well! At the children's events, we always include training tips, and show the kids the benefits of training a dog, both to themselves as well as to "Fido."
Our Japan tour has been moved to October! Jilli and Ruby are popular in Japan and we are very excited about appearing there! Our main theme will be the benefits of training, especially my theory that if a child learns how to train a dog, they actually can discover the roots of the learning process itself. On Monday, the pup has no idea what to do, by Wednesday they are starting to get it, and by Friday, they own it, with just 5-10 minutes of FUN training per day! The Japanese are very interested in their children getting activities to develop the FUN part of learning, as opposed to being in front of their computers all day. I can't wait to go!
We wish you all a wonderful start of Summer! Keep cool, have fun, and give your doggies some woofs, hugs and kisses from Judy, me and the pups!

Happy Endings...
|
In December of 2010 our beloved Yorkie, Bello, passed away suddenly at age 12. Of course we were devastated, and the house was not complete without the pitter patter of Yorkie feet.
In January we were so fortunate to find our Sheldon (formerly Benji) on line with YTNR. Five months later we found Leonard (formerly Casey) and also adopted him. We are so grateful for the work that YTNR does to find homes for these little ones.
Jackie Wolfe, our state director in Illinois, kept in touch and encouraged me to get involved with the organization. What a blessing! I started out helping with fund raising events and making ruffle balls and blankets.
In March 2012 we decided to become fosters for YTNR. We fostered Tara the Maltese for 6 weeks and she was placed in a wonderful home with a mom, dad, and doggie sister. Tara was a puppy mill rescue and when we took her in she was very unresponsive and very scared. After about a week her tailed curled up and she was no longer afraid of me picking her up. She learned to potty outside and walk on a leash. She enjoyed going for long walks with Sheldon and Leonard. It was so rewarding to see her change from a scared little girl into a confident lady in such a short amount of time.
In May we helped out fostering Sadie for a few days. She was also a delight.
In June 2012 we took in Howie. He was adopted in 13 days! This little boy was so sweet. He didn't have any teeth and came to us with his body covered in sores due to an allergic reaction. Well, a trip to the vet, antibiotics, and a few good baths later he was SO much better. It was so encouraging again to see how resilient these dogs can be.
I know that many dogs don't have happy endings. I am just so glad my husband and I could play a part in helping Tara, Sadie and Howie recover from their situations and place them in their forever homes. When we decided to foster I was concerned that Sheldon and Leonard might not accept another dog or that the foster dog would not accept our boys. But they just seem to know that it is okay. It has been a wonderful experience. I never thought I could do it. I thought it would be too hard to give them up.
I'm not going to lie - it is hard. But when you find the right home for the dogs it is an amazing feeling and it is easy to let them go because you know they are finally home.
I would like to encourage all of you to consider fostering. It is an incredible experience and an honor to be a guardian for these wonderful babies.
Here's a picture of Howie in his new home after just a few days.
He is definitely happy to finally be home!

Tribute to Angel Stacey

Hannelie with Little Stacey girl
|
Just want to let you all know about today being a very sad day for our little family. Little Stacey said good bye to all of us - very
unexpectedly. She was at the vet's yesterday getting a work-up, and
some tummy meds.
Went back this morning after the results came back
to start on IV fluids and pain meds - they were thinking she was
starting pancreatitis, but still in mild form. She sat in the sun for a few minutes before we left home, drove to the vet's, mainly in my arms, snuggling a bit, and seemed OK in handover.
They called me after I left to say she had a seizure, arrested and they are not getting her back. Our vet was wonderful, she tried for 20 minutes, and was crying as much as I was by the time I got back there - but our little girl could not go on any more ...
At least I got a last little kiss on the way, and she was in the arms of people she knew and who cared about her when she died. Thank you so much for all the support she has had from you all. She was our little princess, and she thought so too! I will forward her last little picture of her and me, taken less than 15 minutes before she died, at the vet's office. We were going to send it to
mommy Pam.
Take care and give your little love's a hug! Hannelie

Pet-A-Palooza - Paula Fonseca - California |
Yorkshire Terrier National Rescue was well represented at the Pet-A-Palooza event held at Rusch Park in Citrus Height, CA on June 16, 2012. This event is sponsored by CBS Radio stations of Sacramento and welcomes pets of all kinds. The park was filled with dogs, but cats and a small variety of other pets attended as well. There was a food court, demonstrations by K-9 units, Splash Dogs and vendors selling every kind of pet item imaginable.
The Yorkie Rescue booth, located in Adoption Alley, was visited by virtually hundreds of people. Our volunteers, and our Yorkies, were real troopers, as the temperature that day reached 107 degrees! The event was prepared for the heat though and there were two large tents called 'Hydration Stations' set up with misters, small swimming pools and lots of fresh cool drinking water. The focus of our booth was two fold: showcasing the wonderful dogs we have available for adoption and secondly, recruiting loving families to become foster homes so we can save more dogs. This event was a wonderful opportunity to expose the public to our organization and to educate many that it's not just the 'Heintz 57' dogs that end up in shelters and in need of a loving forever home.

Neeko's Joke ;o)
|
~ A man follows a woman as she carries her Yorkie out of a movie theatre. He stops her and says: "I'm sorry to bother you, but I couldn't help but notice that your dog was really into the movie. He cried at the right spots, he moved nervously in his seat at the boring parts, but most of all, he laughed like crazy at the funny parts. Don't you find that unusual?" "Yes," she replied, "I found it very unusual because he hated the book!" ~
Love to all, Neeko :o) |
