Dear Friends, My name is Zoe... As we were preparing this little article on Precious Zoe we learned that she had died last night. So many of you were following her progress we wanted to send this out in memory of this sweet little yorkie that we all fell in love with.
Zoe is 2 years old and only weighs 1.6 lbs. Zoe was brought into the vet on February 18,right at closing time. Her owners stated that she was sick and that they couldn't stay as they had to be somewhere but that they would be back on Monday. The vet said that Zoe was comatose and having a seizure and was hypoglycemic. Monday came but the owners didn't. They left a phone number but no one answers the phone when the clinic calls. The vet called our Yorkshire Terrier National Rescue (YTNR) Volunteer late on Wednesday, February 22 in the afternoon to let us know about her and asked if our rescue could take her. He was pretty sure she has a liver shunt but hadn't done any tests to confirm it as he had been trying to get hold of the owners to get permission to do further testing. When our volunteer saw Zoe for the first time she was extremely thin and weak. She could hardly hold her head up. They did her blood work which confirmed the shunt and released her to YTNR.
We took her to The University of Tennessee and they discovered that besides only weighing 1.6 pounds and having a liver shunt she also had open fontanelle, water on the brain, which made her not a candidate for the liver shunt surgery at this time. They gave her medication to reduce the fluid around her brain and see if she couldn't get a little stronger and possibly put on some weight before they did anything else to her. She is responding well to the treatment and medications. Zoe has continued to have her ups and downs in her foster home. She is being hand fed her warmed cut up dog food and loves strawberries, green beans and yogurt drops. She developed another infection and is on her second round of antibiotics for that. Zoe had stopped trying to walk last week but is now trying to stand up again. Her little leg bones look more the size of a small chicken wing bone than a leg bone but she is trying to get up and walk.
Zoe's vet bills are over $600 and after evaluating her situation YTNR has decided to keep her in foster care and as comfortable as she can be for however long that could be. Your donations will help us continue to be able to care for Zoe's medical expenses and some of these little dogs who have so many problems but still need to be loved and cared for through to the end.
Sadly we learned this morning that Zoe passed away peacefully on her foster moms lap last night. She will truly make a beautiful angel. Thank you to all who supported Zoe's medical expenses and helped her through these last few months of her precious little life. And a very special thank you to Barbara and Franz Buechele for giving this little dog the love and care that she needed during this most difficult time.
