Friendship is a single soul dwelling in two bodies.

--Aristotle

Hello Yorkshire Terrier National Rescue Friends!

As the Beatles have sung: "I get by with a little help from my friends." With collaborative efforts, the work of YTNR gets accomplished across distance, across the United States. Throughout my time in the organization, I have seen us leverage technology to accomplish some amazing work.  We have a pretty robust (and musical!) website, email distribution lists, online forms, and other types of digital resources that help us get the work done.

It's through relationships that the work gets done. Technology is the tool. Relationships are the lifeblood.  It doesn't matter, as far as I'm concerned, if someone has 1,000 Facebook friends, until and unless the person knows what it is like to have one person in the world whom he or she can call when a Yorkie becomes sick or dies, and have that friend share the pain. I have called our President, Mary Elizabeth Dugmore, when I was so grief stricken I could barely form words, and have had her just with me. On the phone. Through the tears. Through the silence. Lighting candles on either end of our conversation.

One of the main reasons this organization is so successful is the relationships, trust and goodwill that we have developed.

I hope you enjoy this month's newsletter. Thanks to the persistent efforts of volunteers and contributors, I feel that this publication gets more and more robust, educational, and entertaining. This is a celebration of our work.

I wish you all good things.

Julie

Spotlight - Happy Endings...

Jim and Denise About three and a half years ago my husband Jim and I were given a Yorkie Terrier male by the name of Jack, he was 5 years old.  The owners couldn't give him the attention and time that he required.  We became so attached to Jack that we couldn't imagine our lives without him.  We lost Jack on February 21, 2011 to a liver shunt.  Needless to say we were devastated, expecially my husband.

We discussed getting another Yorkie but my husband wanted a female this time around.  I went online to the YTNR to find a little girl and found one by the name of Polly who is 3 years old in Indiana .  We filled out the application (I was unaware of how thorough the rescue was) and submitted it.  We were anxiously waiting for a reply or a phone call.

Finally, the call came from Corrine Ellison, Indiana State Director, YTNR Coordinator, (what a wonderful woman!) who informed me that she thought Polly was taken, but she had just gotten another rescue by the name of Piper.  We were still going to have our little girl after all.  Come to find out Polly was still available.  My husband and I discussed getting two little girls before Corrine called back.  All the rest was up to Corrine and on March 18th she gave us the great and wonderful news that we could have them both.  On March 24th we left Buffalo New York heading to Kokomo Indiana .  Later that afternoon Corrine pulled up at the Comfort Inn in Kokomo and we were so excited to finally get to meet our 2 little girls, Polly and Piper.

We cannot thank you enough for all of the joy that the girls have put back into our lives.  Our home is so full of life.  We always have a smile on our faces with the pure funny antics of Ms. Polly and the demure, quiet and calm of Ms. Piper.  They are giving us so much love it is absolutely wonderful.

I am in awe of Ms. Corrine and all the work the rescue does.  Thank you so much for rescuing, training, getting them medical attention and allowing qualified people to adopt them.

God bless you all...

Jim & Denise Ceglia

Rick Caran and Jilli Dog
Rick and Jilli
Hello, to all the wonderful, Yorkie-Loving Friends of YTNR!

We are enjoying some long-awaited "SPRING' weather here on Long Island, NY- and hope you are too! It seems the days and nights are gone when Jilli, Ruby and Spidey would stick their noses out the back door, as I encouraged them to "go potty", and they would look up at me as if to say "I don't think so Daddy! A bit too chilly out there!" lol!

UPDATE ON "RUBY" DOG"
If I were to say that Ruby is holding her own on the talent scene, it would be such an understatement! She is stealing the show at events around the county, andRick and Jilli stole lots of hearts in Italy, as well!!! Jilli is still the legendary Rock Star, and Spidey still charms the audiences with his special skills, but when Ruby hits the stage, she wows the crowd, RUBY DOG STYLE! At 3 pounds, she still looks like a tiny puppy, but performs her tricks like a veteran trick show-dawg! IRick and Jilli 2 want to tell you about her new trick, but we are keeping it a secret, until we officially announce it! I am so thankful to Mary Elizabeth, YTNR and breeder, Patti Hood, for this amazing gift of Ruby! A gift that keeps on giving!

YORKIE BALL 2011
OK, here's your chance to see Jilli, Ruby, and Spidey, now known as "Team Jilli Dog," perform and share a great weekend of camaraderie with fellow YTNRers, including parties, lectures, contests, and much more!!! As encouragement for some of our members and friends who haven't attended in the past, we have offered to do one of our 'Seminars' during the day on Friday, where the pups and I will give tips and demonstrations on how to train your dogs to do wonderful tricks, in a fun and simple manner! Then, we will put it all together at a Team Jilli Dog show, on Sat night at the Ball!!!

Jilli and Kranby coverAT LAST!!! OUR CHILDREN'S BOOK IS BEING PRINTED AS WE SPEAK!!!
"Jilli Dog, The Little Dog That Made Mr. Kranby Smile"
I am so proud of this book that I wrote and illustrated! It's a sweet story about discovery, of a boy who learns about senior citizens, helping in the community, and pet therapy, with the help of his little Jilli and Kranby pageYorkie...

Much love, from Rick and Team Jilli Dog!
Bad, Bad Piper

Piper TypingBad, Bad Piper Has Left - At Least For A While

I sure did test my Momma's ability to cope with a naughty girl and she passed.

I don't know what my problem was, but I sure was a naughty and crazy girl this past week.

I stated last Saturday morning.  Momma brought a cup of coffee upstairs along with the newspaper so she could relax in bed for a while.  She put the coffee cup on the night table, went to brush her teeth and came back in two minutes to find that the cup was empty and I was nowhere in sight.  She called "Piper" in a very soft and sweet voice and then said, using the same voice, "I am going to put you in lock-up".  I liked the sound of her voice, but not her words, so I stayed under the bed.  I came out and got on the bed when she was praising Abbey Mia and Harper and giving them treats.  She did not look at me, talk to me, and definitely, she did not give me a treat.

I honestly tried to behave but later in the day when I was outside I found a way to get under the deck and could not find my way out.  Momma threatened to leave me there, since this is not the first time I have done this, but after five minutes she came outside and moved several rocks that are supposed to keep the three of us out from under the deck.  Not much conversation directed to me for the next several hours.

On Monday night I went out and before Momma could close the door I raced out and would not come in when she called me.  I went back under the deck but after ten minutes with nobody looking for me, I began to get scared and found my way out and sheepishly went and stood at the back door until Momma checked and saw me there and opened the door.  I tip-toed into the house and Momma did not say a word to me.  Even Abbey Mia and Harper did not welcome me home.

It occurred to me that I had better change my behavior.  For the rest of the week I have been on my best behavior.  I think Momma has forgiven me and likes me again as much as she loves me.

I hope I can continue to be a good girl, but I wouldn't bet any money on it.

Illinois "Fun Raiser"
Fund Raiser
Our first annual "fun" raiser here in Illinois was a huge success!  We had help from our volunteers in Indiana who brought 5 foster dogs ,Teagan, Teddy Boo, Josh, Peanut and beautiful little Gin Gin  who charmed us all moving about the room in her scooter and beautiful pink dress.  We served hot dogs, held a bake sale with human treats and dog cookies, had a silent auction, and sold items from the Yorkie boutique.  We held contests for the biggest Yorkie (19 pounds and adorable!), and the best dressed (three beautiful girls dressed in matching outfits).  We took lots of pictures of Yorkies in the picture booth with their Easter bunny ears sitting in a basket.  The kissing booth was a big success ; even our fosters took their turn.  We had obedience instruction, agility jumps and tunnels, and a large meet and greet room where Yorkies and their owners had a chance to interact.  All while raising money to help our wonderful little Yorkies get the medical care and homes they deserve.  It was all fun, but the best part of the day was meeting our YTNR Fund Raiser 2former little fosters again and catching up with the wonderful people who have adopted them.

Thanks to all the wonderful volunteers who worked so hard to make this event a success.
The planning committee Dee Thompson , Vivan Boettger,  Susanne Proffitt, Marge Gielarowski, Arlene King, Susann Ditsler. The Volunteers from Indiana Kathy Shireley, Jane Fero, Corrine Ellison.

To my husband and son for all their hard work.
A special thanks to our adoptive parents who drove long distances to come to the event,  Betty Gae with Lucy, Lacey, Lexie, Amalia and Ron Spaulding with Neeko, Cecelia Albregts, with Christian Luke, Francesco
Foot Note: We were asked by many of the attendees' when we are going to have another event.

Forever Home - Janna

Janna Forever homeDear YTNR,

My name is Janna & I was very lucky & blessed to go to my forever home on January 2, 2011.  I have been "living the dream" with my family since they came to Tennessee and picked me up from my sweet foster mom, Stacey.

My mommy, Julie, and I were reading the April newsletter and we were both saddened about the liver shunt fund getting so low.  We knew that we just had to send a donation immediately.  I would not be here today if I had not gotten my liver shunt surgery, so we want to make sure other yorkies get the same opportunity.

Thanks so much for helping me when I needed it most.

Love,
Janna

Dear Janna,
Thank you so much for your generous donation to our liver shunt fund, this donation will mean that we can help at least one more yorkie with a liver shunt.

We are so happy to hear that you are so happy in your forever home. "Living the Dream" is what we hope for all yorkies and dog on this earth.  We hope your mommy will bring you to the Yorkie Ball in October so we can see you again.

Love,
  MaryElizabeth

Neeko's Joke

~ A policeman was taking a vandalism report at an elementary school when he was interrupted by a six year old girl. She looked up and down at his uniform and asked, "Are you a policeman?"

"Yes, I am," he said.

"My mother told me that if I ever needed help I should ask a policeman. Is that right," the girl asked.

"Yes it is," said the policeman.

The girl extended her foot to the policeman and said, "OK, then, would you tie my shoe?" ~

Love to all,
Neeko :o)

Mollie - In loving memory

Mollie 1With Love to Mollie

My beautiful Yorkie Mollie left  us on April 4th, 2011.  She was 14 years and 3months. Even a long Yorkie life is never long enough.  Mollie had a tremendous zest for life and loved the whole world.  When she was younger the children in my neighborhood who didn't have a dog would wait for me to walk by with Mollie.  She would make sure that they got some doggie love.  Mollie always welcomed the rescue Yorkies that I fostered  into our home.  It was as if Mollie 3she knew that they needed extra reassurance at this point in their lives. She also loved adventure and accompanied me on many boating and kayaking trips.

Mollie was the proud mother of "Glover's Hurricane Harley" whom we paid tribute to last month in this newsletter.  I know that they are together and happy now.

We love and miss you Mollie - Sharon and your Yorkie sisters Dollie, Rainbow and Sylvie
