Greetings!
SHALOM! ARZA Canada, the Canadian arm of Reform Zionism, is happy to keep you up-to-date on important news about Israel. |
| Spotlight on: Economic Peace |
The Israeli-Palestinian peace process appears at an impasse. Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has endorsed a Palestinian state (with limitations) and a 10-month freeze on settlement construction outside the security barrier. But President Mahmoud Abbas insists on a full construction freeze based on the pre-1967 border, including east Jerusalem, before he will agree to further negotiation.
In parallel, however, the West Bank is experiencing positive changes, thanks to the Prime Ministers of both Israel and the Palestinian Authority. Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad has an ambitious plan to transform the West Bank from its poor and violence-prone past into an area of security, economic progress and credible government. The US is training professional police units to maintain security. Israel is easing travel within the West Bank, ceding control to the new security forces, and facilitating business for Palestinian companies.
These business, security and institutional improvements are expected to benefit ordinary Palestinians and make a Palestinian state more viable. Optimistically, this should boost the prospects for peace. You can read an overview of these developments in the Jerusalem Post, the Wall Street Journal, and listen to the CEO of the Israeli-Palestinian Chamber of Commerce discussing the growth of business between Israeli and Palestinian companies.
In a similar vein, Journalist Khaled Abu Toameh promotes a shift to win-win thinking, arguing against the mindset that being pro-Palestinian means being hostile towards Israel. |
| Reform Update |
Against the background of a general increase in aggressive behaviour by the ultra-Orthodox community in Jerusalem, a woman was recently arrested by the police for wearing a tallit and carrying a Torah at the Kotel (Western Wall).
Anat Hoffman, Director of the Reform movement's Israel Religious Action Centre, was among the women and describes the incident in The Forward. She is also quoted in a New York Times report on the increase in tensions between the haredi and non-haredi communitites.

Israel is a world leader in the development of technology for solar power generation.

| Science - Invented in Israel |
The world's tiniest medical camera measures 0.05 inches, is cheap to produce and will allow doctors to see inside the body like never before, potentially eliminating invasive, costly and risky exploratory procedures. |
| Archaeology |
Several years ago Israeli archaeologists discovered the largest floor mosaic in the country, during construction to widen a street in the city of Lod. You can watch a video on plans to make this discovery accessible to the public, and also read a story on the 1,700 year old foot prints found under the floor. |
