e-fileE-file system is clicking along
Be prepared to file your court documents electronically.

Since Clay County began e-filing court documents this summer, Duval, Nassau and St. Johns counties have been gearing up to get their systems online by Jan. 1, 2011.

The filing of probate and possibly more court documents is planned by the clerks' offices in Duval and Nassau counties in the Fourth Judicial Circuit Court, and St. Johns County in the Seventh Judicial Circuit Court.

"Best barbecue in town," "Great Cuban food," Great pizza and calzones," "Pricey but worth it," are all reviews on Florida restaurants from attorneys who know. They've been there.

If you're traveling for a deposition or hearing, check to see if a restaurant in the area has been recommended.

redactRedacting confidential information now attorneys' responsibility

Social Security and bank account numbers,

juvenile delinquency and grand jury records, are just a few pieces of confidential information that need to be redacted from court filings.

A major overhaul to Rule 2.42 of the Rules of Judicial Administration, effective October 1, made attorneys responsible for redacting confidential information from court records so it does not appear in public records.

In the area of Personal Injury:
A seven-figure settlement was negotiated for a woman who sustained injuries after being struck down by a passenger bus while lawfully and fully within a designated crosswalk at Timuquana Road and Seaboard Avenue, Jacksonville.
The plaintiff suffered left leg fibular fracture, a tibia fracture, a ligament tear requiring surgery and a torn meniscus.
The bus driver was charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

In the area of medical malpractice:
A six-figure settlement was negotiated for the family of a woman who was admitted as a patient to a St. Johns County hospital October 2005 with a stage-two sacral bedsore. The bedsore progressed and deteriorated as a result of the hospital's negligence, and the woman died.
The hospital failed to provide care, supervision and services necessary to maintain her physical and mental health.
Partner Eric Ragatz negotiated both settlements.
