Nurse sues employer for wrong diagnosis; loss of fingers, legs, part of nose

      Edwards & Ragatz P.A. intends to file suit against Southern Baptist Hospital of Florida Inc. for a 40-year-old Jacksonville woman who lost her legs, fingers and part of her nose to a bacterial infection that hospital staff failed to diagnose.

 FJA2010 FJA Annual Convention


     Tom Edwards Jr. (second from left) attended the 2010 Florida Justice Association's Annual Convention in West Palm Beach in June. Edwards served as 2008-2009 president of FJA.

     The event attracted a who's who of Florida politicians, including Gov. Charlie Crist, I-Fla.; Lt. Gov. Jeff Kottkamp, R-Fla.; CFO Alex Sink, D-Fla.; Senate President Jeff Atwater, R-North Palm Beach; and incoming Speaker of the House Dean Cannon, R-Winter Park.

 In the 1930s New York Society Library employees found a ledger that revealed on Oct. 5, 1789, first U.S. President George Washington checked out "The Law of Nations," a book on international law, and Volume12 of the "Parliamentary Register," a book of debates from the British House of Commons.
 
The books were never returned.

Eric Ragatz Receives 
AV Preeminent Rating

     Eric Ragatz received an AV Preeminent rating from the Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory Peer Review.
 
     Ragatz earned 4.6 out of 5 points, which the Martindale-Hubbell website calls "a significant rating accomplishment and a testament that his peers rank him at the highest of professional experience."

E&R has added Debt Collection Abuse to the firm's areas of practice.
 
     Unethical practices by debt collectors have recently made headlines and spurred the FTC to closely monitor debt collection arbitration. A report was issued in July with recommendations to protect consumers and repair the broken system.
 
    "Repairing A Broken System: Protecting Consumers in Debt Collection Litigation and
Arbitration" is posted on ftc.gov.
 
     In a concurring statement, Commissioner Julie Brill urged congress to enact a temporary ban on the mandatory arbitration of consumer debt collection disputes.
 
SuitsSuits & Settlements
 
 In the area of Maritime Injury:
 
     Eric Ragatz negotiated a confidential settlement for a woman who sustained injuries as a passenger on a personal watercraft that was hit by a second personal watercraft.
 
     Both watercraft drivers were charged with operating a vessel in a reckless manner. The driver of the second personal watercraft was charged with failure to maintain a safe speed to be able to avoid a collision, and not having due regard for the limitations of the vessel.
 
     The plaintiff suffered left leg fibular fracture, a tibia fracture, a ligament tear requiring surgery and a torn meniscus.
