Beginners ABC's -- To teach Beginners more effectively (& with more retention), we have added one more month to our Beginners program. We now list Beginners A,B & C classes. This is a total of 12 weeks of Beginner class to encourage the muscle memory a beginning dancer needs to become a competent & comfortable dancer. NOTE: each class contains new material

Thanks to those who joined us at the Beaverton Elks Lodge for birthday days this year. Our group of 55 dancers had a great time and the band Larry and Terri were fun to dance to with lots of WCS, ECS, Foxtrots, Waltzes, Cha Chas, Rumbas, Tango....

FREEDOM & RESPECT
A reminder of dance courtesy
What comes to mind today is that lone Foxtrotter or Quickstepper or Two-Stepper on the dance floor. Though "everyone else knows" the music is clearly West or East Coast Swing, this one couple still tries to find a narrow band at the outside of the dance floor to enjoy the music in their own way. Do they have the right to enjoy a Foxtrot when everyone else is dancing Swing? I suppose this can be debated... but as far as I understand, custom places Swing dances (and all "on-the-Spot" dances) to be danced towards the inside of the dance floor and "moving dances" to the outside. "Freedom of the Ear" is a right for everyone and awareness of others on the dance floor is key to being in a social arena. So next time you notice "the lone couple" remember to move inward and allow them to enjoy too. Social dancing is all about moving to music; music is in the ear of each dancer; and we all enjoy the freedom to choose whatever style of dance pleases us at the time.

Linda Springstead, owner and operator of DanceWell, has been a premier instructor in the Portland area for more than 23 years. She has been instrumental in providing good form and technique for social dancers of PDX and is known for her lively and fun classes and lessons for both the Beginning and Advanced student. Rick Davis, a fairly new instructor, is also a clear and fun instructor.
