POURING FORTH...
fall & winter 2010

When we look into the world it's not difficult to see the glass as half empty. Politicians continue to disappoint us with their half measures and partial solutions. They bicker and fight as the various national economies teeter wildly around us, bloated and drunk as they continue to drink heavily of their own swindle. The glass actually looks pretty close to empty.  But there are other glasses...

In Think OutWord we continue our work. We put on events where we study society and social health... we ask "how can it be renewed?" Besides these larger gatherings, the core group comes together regularly, we work with shared principles and practices, we make decisions, we find our next steps. We do what we love. The glass is easily half full.

And it's growing fuller. Out of a shared inspiration, individuals start new businesses (Banjo Mountain Café!). They pioneer new work connected to Goethean science and ethical finance. They create truly free cultural spaces (the Free Columbia Art Course) and connect to international networks working for direct democracy. And much more. As we continue to wrestle with our social questions, educating ourselves and developing new capacities, our glass begins to brim...

But what is our small glass compared to the gigantic mugs of the world? Can we make a difference? Yes. It's not the vessel that matters, it's what's inside. As our cup begins to run over, we catch the fragrance of a new wine, we watch as a new current enters the world - a new substance made up of the inspirations and gifts of a new generation.

Everyone who strives to connect to the future that wants to be born is a new generation. We invite you to join us in this work. It belongs to us all. We invite you to join our conferences in 2011 (check out our website for further information) and we invite you to donate (money, of course, enables us to do this work, but more importantly, it connects us. We'd rather 100 people donate $5 each - resulting in only $500 - then have only 1 person donate $5000). We also strongly encourage you to start your own group if you're too far away to work with us. And please stay connected with us online: Facebook, WeStrive, Jumo - these are all fine ways to share resources and move the work along when we can't meet face-to-face. It's time to take up this work together.

Thanks for your support,

Seth Jordan

And now, for the News in Brief:

Core Group on Fire IslandThe core group is making its first major transition. This past year was the first time we've had a core group, and the experience was fantastic: a real forming of colleagueship in shared work, relationships, and ideals. We found out what a peer-led training is! Now we're finishing off the year and opening things up for others to jump in. Next eNews I'll let you know the new folks who are joining us and say goodbye to those who are heading off for other adventures.

Banjo Mountain CafeIn September, core group members Kristin Dalton and Peter Buckbee opened the Banjo Mountain Cafe in Harlemville, NY! Through this initiative they're finding new ways to work associatively and support the creation of culture in Harlemville. It's a place for the community to congregate and for new ideas to be born (already a new form has been born with the used book section of their cafe... a Community Book Trust!)

Besides all that...

...Nathaniel Williams started the second year of Free Columbia with Laura Summer

... Sarah Hearn came back from a month-long walk along the Camino de Santiago in Spain

...Meaghan Witri had a leading role in an edgy little indie flick called "The Winning Season" (and before that she was in Dornach teaching a workshop at the Mystery Dramas conference)

...Jordan Walker hosted a 6-week Research Residency with Frank Chester this fall in Spring Valley (and is now off to Dornach to do an Independent Study)

(...Seth Jordan is already in Dornach doing an Independent Study)

...and somehow we've held three conferences this fall: a 9-day Community Lab called "Doing Social Research", a facilitator's training with Nicanor Perlas in Lemniscate Process, and an intensive study of the Philosophy of Freedom by Rudolf Steiner.

A busy and fruitful time.

And one final Resource:

Travis Henry's Threefold Now

Travis Henry is a great friend of Think OutWord and an individual completely dedicated to seeing the social organism evolve in a healthy way. To this end, he has created powerful illustrations of what the flags of the different nations could look like if they became consciously threefold - if they created three separate administrations to oversee their cultural, political and economic activities. This is an ideal that Steiner put forward almost 100 years ago and that many today forget, or write-off as impossible. These images ask each of us "what is it that we're striving for?" and hopefully push us, once more, to reach for the impossible.

That's all for now. Thanks again for your continued interest in our work!

Have a fantastic Christmas and happy holidays.
