thinkoutword e-news BECOMING AT HOME IN THE WORLD March '10 |
|
We come together to cultivate a living perception of the social organism in order to help bring health to society. This is the red thread running through Think OutWord's activities, whatever and, especially at the moment, wherever they might be.
A month ago we held our first session of the year. 65 youthful souls gathered in Harlemville, NY, for a conference entitled "I Give you my Word - an exploration into the nature of agreements." We were planning to work with Orland Bishop (who does amazing work in LA with at-risk youth) but at the last moment, he had to cancel. What might have been a crisis was no problem at all. The organizers had planned a brimming event so only made one or two minor adjustments. Robert Karp, from the Biodynamic Association, was in town anyways so we brought him in to work with us on a social practice from Otto Scharmer's Theory U called "Case Clinic." The rest of the time was made up of presentations by participants (we heard about the nature of the Logos, Money as a social compact, and the "Republican" principle in governance) and discussion (sometimes facilitated through processes such as Open Space Technology). Lots of good stuff. (We also have a written version of one of the talks! Nathaniel Williams gave a presentation on The Source of Social Renewal, which was an exploration into the social ideas of the philosopher Immanuel Levinas, who independently came to the same conclusion as Rudolf Steiner concerning the need for an independent Cultural Realm as the only place from which morality can spring.)
"One of the things that made this conference different, and that makes this community so open, is its emphasis on peer-led facilitation. Other conferences have strict guidelines, time tables, and programmes, but such a rigid structure allows little room for real creativity or growth. At Think OutWord there was a group of organizers who did an outstanding job of putting the conference together, but they were all participants just as much as the rest of us. Similarly, each and every individual was given the space and encouraged to bring their own ideas to the group or to lead an activity or conversation. This was a space where the question of agreements could really be explored." - Thomas Willington, conference participant. Read his full write-up here.

CORE GROUP OUT IN THE WORLD
Nicanor Perlas Documentary Project. Jordan Walker and Seth Jordan did some fundraising this winter and caught a plane to the Philippines to begin filming Nick's run for president. So far they've created a handful of videos online - one where Nick talks about "New Politics and Inner Transformation" as well as a longer Threefolding 101 series. You can find them all at the website www.societalwholeness.org.
Think OutWord has begun working with local organizations and businesses. Discussions are underway on how to transform an independent bookstore in Harlemville, NY, along more associative lines, and members of Think OutWord recently facilitated a World Cafe to help a local theater group begin creating a Community Supported Theater model.
Free Columbia looking Forward. Free Columbia, the "free" painting course Nathaniel Williams and Laura Summer started this past year is alive and well and already looking forward to the upcoming year! A description of the course as well as info on how to apply can be found here.
Future Health of the Anthroposophical Society. Jordan Walker is interested in why younger and newer individuals meeting the Anthroposophical movement (both terms being used quite loosely) join, or don't join the Anthoposophical Society. He is doing research around this question and has created a brief survey. If you would like to help, please take it. |
The 2010 Credere Fund grant recipients are already well underway!
Silas Beardslee has launched a website, Balance for Zimbabwe, and is moving forward with fundraising for the Rimbi Farm Project, a community supported Biodynamic farm in Eastern Zimbabwe.
Bea Birch has found a building in Philmont, NY, for her Agawamuck Project for the Fine and Practical Arts (a crafts training inspired by Ruskin Mills in England). Crafts teachers and students are all falling into place, and the local schools have actually started contacting her about working with their students as well.
Seamus Maynard has played the first of three benefit concerts that he has scheduled for 2010. With help from Credere, Seamus has been able to work on his own original compositions and, through performing them, give back to the different groups that have nourished and supported him over the years. |

WHERE WE'RE HEADED
Unfortunately, for anyone who hoped to join us this spring, we won't be hosting an open session, but will probably do a smaller Core Group retreat instead. This means that besides the usual Intensive Study in the fall (which this year looks like it might be on Steiner's Philosophy of Freedom) we might host a larger open session then as well.
The details are not yet finalized on our summer session, but it looks hopeful that it will be the prototype for a possible collaboration between Think OutWord and Camphill. At the moment we are designing a two-week workcamp in upstate New York for August of 2010. The focus of the gathering will be on connecting to and transforming the land and exploring the social/spiritual impulse of Karl Konig, founder of the Camphill movement.
No need to wait till the summer though... half the Think OutWord's Core Group will be traveling in just a couple weeks to the Goetheanum in Switzerland to participate in FOCUS - an international initiative forum hosted by the Youth Section. This will be an important event and all are welcome. Find out more here.
If you want to travel still further, at the end of April Think OutWord is co-sponsoring an international training in the Philippines called EMERGE! Emerge refers to the emergence of Civil Society as a third global force in societal governance. Through conversation - facilitated by different social technologies/processes - and through working closely with mentors, the training will enable artists, educators, and activists to connect more deeply to their source of strength in the world - Cultural Power. Find out more here.
