Coach Calipari Joins Samaritan's Feet in Haiti!

UK Coach Cal washes the feet of a Haitian orphan.

University of Kentucky Coach John Calipari is highly recognized for his accomplishments on the basketball court.  But when the 2009 Sports Illustrated National Coach of the Year approached Samaritan's Feet Founder Manny Ohonme during the 2010 Final Four Week in Indianapolis, basketball was not on his mind.

Coach Cal shared with Manny his desire to partner with Samaritan's Feet to provide new athletic shoes for the children in earthquake ravaged Haiti.  Coach Cal had already raised more than a million dollars through UK's  Red Cross telethon Hoops for Haiti, and determined that an alliance with Samaritan's Feet would provide even more assistance to the devastated region.

On June 24th, Samaritan's Feet Marketing Director Todd Melloh traveled to Haiti with Coach Cal and members of his staff.  The group visited the New Life Orphanage in Sarthe, Haiti, which sheltered many children who had lost their parents during the earthquake.

The Samaritan's Feet team and Coach Calipari washed feet and provided 500 children with a new pair of athletic shoes along with hope and encouragement for their future.

Coach Cal reflected upon his experience, saying, "It's really neat the way Samaritan's Feet does it. You can't imagine the smiles and appreciation. It's an amazing feeling to give those kids even a few minutes of that excitement that comes with getting new shoes."

Coach Cal continues his relationship with Samaritan's Feet when he will use his platform to coach one game this season in his bare feet.

In the fall of 2009, the Big South Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committees adopted Samaritan's Feet as their conference-wide community service initiative.

From October 2009 through May 2010, the Big South Conference committees (comprised of  ten universities) raised shoes and funds for Samaritan's Feet.  In addition, Big South Conference coaches such as CSU's Radebaugh and  Goodnight pictured above, coached a game barefoot in solidarity with the efforts of the student-athlete advisory committees.

Ten thousand dollars and over 10,000 pairs of shoes  were collected for Samaritan's Feet, all due to the motivated committee members who championed the cause at their individual universities.   Winthrop University was recognized as the biggest contributor to the effort.

"I could not be more impressed or proud of the commitment our institutional student-athlete advisory committees made to this initiative," enthused Big South Conference Associate Commissioner Dawn Turner.  "We are proud to have been associated with Samaritan's Feet, and so happy to have made even a small contribution to the work that Manny and his organization are doing in our world."

For the tireless efforts of the Big South Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committees, we are proud to designate them our Samaritans of the Month!

International Children

SF Volunteer washes the feet of a young child.
Miami

The world can be a lonely place for a child, especially for a young person transplanted from their native home to live in the United States without their guardian.  Such is the case for the children at a school in Miami, Florida.

Antioch International Church in partnership with Samaritan's Feet brought smiles and joy to these children ages 3-17 when the  team  delivered new athletic shoes and socks.

The volunteers spent hours with the children, washing their feet and sharing God's love. Despite the power outage that left the classrooms without lights or air conditioning, both the shoe recipients and the team members were blessed by the experience.

Samaritan's Feet Travels to Nigeria!

On June 16th, Manny Ohonme returned to his birthplace of Lagos, Nigeria with a team from Samaritan's Feet.

Throughout the ten-day trip,  Samaritan's Feet partnered with Pro-Health and SOZO Ministries to provide new athletic shoes and free dental and medical care to the most destitute areas of Lagos.  The team was encouraged to witness the immediate improvement a pair of shoes provided children who must daily walk barefoot through trash and raw sewage.  Hundreds of children in numerous locations not only received new shoes, but were also individually encouraged and prayed for by a loving member of the Samaritan's Feet team.

In addition, Samaritan's Feet organized a basketball camp for 150 middle school students, most of whom arrived in bare feet or in socks without shoes.  These children each had their feet washed and received new basketball shoes as they participated in drills and games.  Especially meaningful was the connection Manny had with this particular basketball court--it was at this same location 30 years ago that Manny received his first pair of shoes!
