Samaritan's Feet Provides Hope After the Storm
A volunteer from New Horizons Church washes feet at the distribution. |
On April 24th, one of the most devastating tornados in Mississippi's history rampaged through the state. In some areas the tornado was more than a mile wide and destroyed nearly everything in its path.
Holmes County was one of the hardest hit communities, with more than 50 buildings sustaining structural damage. Many families lost their belongings and even their homes in the storm.
In order to help with the recovery process, New Horizons
Church in Jackson partnered with Samaritan's Feet to distribute new athletic shoes to the children of families affected by the tornado. This partnership between Samaritan's Feet and New Horizons Church provided 3,000 pairs of shoes to children in the Holmes County area. The efforts of New Horizons Church and Samaritan's Feet not only gave the residents of Holmes County new shoes, but also hope for rebuilding. Mississippi State Senator Kenneth Jones was present at the event to show his support for the volunteers and the victims of the tornado.
"The morale of the people after two weeks is still good," remarked Senator Jones, "because they see the many volunteers and everybody who is trying to pitch-in and make sure they make it through this with some relief."

XOWii Racer Eric Meyer named Samaritan of the Month!
Barefoot Eric Meyer (on right) placing third at the WC Mosport. |
XOWii (pronounced Zowee) race car driver Eric Meyer has been designated Samaritan of the Month for May 2010! Meyer is a driver for XOWii Racing in the World Challenge Series, and for the past two months has creatively raised funds and awareness for Samaritan's Feet among fans at racing events.
At the Long Beach Grand Prix on April 17th, Meyer invited fans to sign the hood of his car, which was imprinted with the Samaritan's Feet logo (see photo below). After the race, fans could enter a contest online to win the signed hood. Many of these fans were inspired to give donations at the track.
After finishing second in the Long Beach Grand Prix, Meyer accepted his award in his bare feet. Meyer later commented, "My sole purpose of the Long Beach Event was to earn a top three finish so I could go barefoot on the podium and raise awareness for Samaritan's Feet." Meyer continued his efforts on behalf of Samaritan's Feet last weekend at the Mosport Victoria Day Speedfest. Fans who attended the races again got the chance to participate in the "sign the hood of the race car" campaign. Those who donated were also entered into a drawing to win an autographed XOWii Racing helmet and jersey in addition to the hood.

NABC a Vital Link for Barefoot Coaches!
South Dakota State Coach Nagy helps Samaritan's Feet. |
The National Assoc. of Basketball Coaches has played an integral role in the success of the Samaritan's Feet Barefoot Movement.
Since 2008 when IUPUI Coach Ron Hunter became the first "Barefoot Coach", the
partnership between Samaritan's Feet and the NABC has gained momentum, leading to over 3,000 coaches at every level shedding their shoes and socks for one game during the season.
In addition to recruiting barefoot coaches throughout the country, the NABC has connected Samaritan's Feet with their corporate sponsors and has encouraged coaches to participate at Samaritan's Feet shoe distributions.
Dozens of coaches volunteered at the Final Four Community Action Day in Indianapolis on April 1st, where 1,000 children in need had their feet washed and were provided with new athletic shoes.
"The NABC has a heart for service and we are greatly blessed by their dedication to community outreach," remarked Manny Ohonme. "We look forward to future collaborations that will continue to impact thousands of children both domestically and internationally. Thank you NABC! You are a true Samaritan!"
