Martin Luther King, III and Dr. Bernice A. King embrace Samaritan's Feet Barefoot Sunday!

MLKIII
Dr. Bernice A. King stands in solidarity with Manny Ohonme (l), Bishop James Dixon (r), Martin Luther King III (r),  and regional pastors at the March 19th press conference.

March 19th, 2010 marked a historic day for Samaritan's Feet!  In Atlanta, Georgia, Manny Ohonme held a press conference to announce an alliance between Samaritan's Feet, Martin Luther King, III, Dr. Bernice A. King, and thousands of pastors across the country.

In honor of the 42nd Anniversary of the death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on April 4th, pastors throughout the country will deliver their Easter message in their bare feet.

The goal is to put 1,000,000 pairs of shoes on the feet of impoverished children. Pastors will ask their members to make a $10 donation which buys, sorts, ships, and distributes a pair of shoes to a child in need.

"We are partnering with Samaritan's Feet because they serve the poor and demonstrate compassionate acts of service by washing the feet of shoe recipients," said Martin Luther King, III.  "My father stood for the impoverished and Samaritan's Feet embodies that every day. "

Samaritan's Feet names Susie Herges as '1st Quarter Volunteer' of 2010!
SusieHerges
(Susie Herges buried beneath a pile of the thousands of shoes she collected for Samaritan's Feet!)

Like all compassionate Americans, Susie Herges' heart ached as she witnessed the suffering in Haiti following the devastating earthquake last month.  But Susie chose to turn her concern into action by organizing a community wide shoe drive to collect shoes for Samaritan's Feet Haiti Relief.

Susie contacted schools, churches, hospitals, and businesses in her hometown of  Kearney, Nebraska, asking them to help her place shoes on the feet of hurting Haitians.

Susie came up with her own catchphrase--'Give a Pair, Show you Care' to encourage donations, and launched several creative projects to raise shoes.  One example was the 'mini shoe store' Susie set up at ten different schools.  Kmart and Walmart supplied the shoes at a discounted rate, allowing students and teachers to conveniently purchase the shoes 'on-site' at their schools.

Within a few weeks, Susie's project raised 4,123 pairs of shoes and 435 pairs of socks!

What's amazing to me is that we have been able to set up this fundraiser so everyone can participate," Susie remarked.  "Five dollars is the price of a lunch when you go out. It would be hard if we were saying, 'Go buy a pair of athletic shoes for $30.'  But most people can find $5 to cut out of their budget."

For her selfless efforts that will  improve the lives of 4,123 children in need, Samaritans' Feet has designated Susie Herges as 'First Quarter Volunteer' of 2010!

Susie raised over 4,000 shoes for impoverished children.  Could you commit to raising one hundred pairs? If you would consider organizing a shoe drive for Samaritan's Feet in your community, please contact us HERE!

HOW IT ALL BEGAN.....
Three decades ago, on one hot summer afternoon at a camp in Lagos, Nigeria, a stranger from Wisconsin befriended a young African boy. This nine-year-old, like so many other children in Africa, had never known the comfort and security of owning a pair of shoes.

In Manny Ohonme's inspiring book Sole Purpose,  you will read the dramatic story of how that one gift not only transformed a life, but became a catalyst for an organization that provides "Shoes of Hope" for millions of needy children around the world.
