Detroit Pistons team with Samaritan's Feet to wash feet, distribute shoes!
Tuesday, October 20th was a memorable day in the City of Detroit--the entire Detroit Pistons Basketball Team joined forces with Samaritan's Feet and its sponsors to wash feet and distribute shoes to children in need.
Pistons players served in every role, from pulling correct shoe sizes to delivering the shoes to the children, to washing their feet and placing the new shoes and socks on their feet.
"They'll walk out in their shoes standing six feet tall," Manny Ohonme told the players before the event, "because their role models touched them in a way they'll never forget."
"This is unique, it's the first time I've ever done something like this but it's for a good cause, so I'm happy to be a part of it," remarked Detroit Pistons Guard Ben Gordon, adding, "It's pretty simple," he said. "Just soap the feet up, let them sit in the water a little while, and they're good to go. It's easy."
"This is a monumental effort," Ohonme said. "To actually see an entire team come support this and the staff and organization, this is the first time. This is a historical moment for us."

Meet 6 year old Ava Garwood- Samaritan of the Week!
When it comes to birthdays, most children look forward to receiving lots of gifts from family and friends. But when six year old Ava Garwood of Burlington, New Jersey had a birthday party to celebrate turning six years old, she asked her friends to each bring a pair of new shoes to the celebration. But the shoes were not for Ava; instead, she collected the shoes to send to Samaritan's Feet, asking us to distribute them to children in need.
Samaritan's Feet was thrilled to honor Ava's request, and her collected shoes were sent to Nairobi, Kenya where they landed on the feet of children at the "Soweto Academy."
There are 500 children who attend Soweto Academy, all of them impoverished and many of them orphans. The principal found some of the neediest children to receive Ava's shoes. Each of the feet of these children were washed by a loving team member from Samaritan's Feet.
Because of Ava, these children in Africa can run and play and not be afraid of stepping on glass or stones. Thank you Ava, for showing such generosity to those in need, and for blessing each of these children with a new pair of shoes! We are privileged to name you our Samaritan of the Week! |

Jamaica's poorest receive hope and new shoes!

When most of us think of Jamaica, we visualize gorgeous beaches and beautiful resorts. Although Jamaica does have these attractions, the sober reality is that thousands of Jamaicans daily suffer from painful cuts, infections and diseases due to not owning a single pair of shoes.
The humanitarian organization Food For the Poor recently partnered with Gleaning For The World and Samaritan's Feet to provide 15,000 pairs of new shoes to impoverished Jamaicans.
"Incorporating the washing of the feet before the actual distribution takes place elevates our work to a whole other level," said Robin Mahfood, President/CEO of Food For The Poor. "This gesture speaks to humility, service and love for those we serve on a daily basis."
Food For the Poor reported that, "as staff members and volunteers bathed the feet of people receiving new shoes, workers spoke face-to-face and prayed with the hundreds of souls whose lives have changed thanks to the new soles protecting their feet."
Parishoners lined up outside of New Testament Church of God in St. Catherine to receive the new shoes.
"In Jamaica," said Karryann, a 34-year-old receiving new shoes, "we did not know that people out there still cared, and we really appreciate our feet being washed and receiving a pair of shoes because that has never been done before."
"It can never be put into words," said Pastor W.A. Blair, echoing Karryann's description of the impact of the foot washing and shoe distribution on his church family and community. "It will be a changed society, a changed church, and a changed family life."
