HEADs UP!

If your child is involved in sports this season it is especially important to be aware of signs and symptoms that may be associated with a concussion.  Remember: if your child suffers a bump or blow to the head while on the field, they should be removed from play.  If they are experiencing symptoms concerning for a concussion, they should not return to play until evaluated by their primary care provider!

Athletes are not the only ones to sustain concussions.  A concussion can be caused by any type of bump or blow to the head.  Falling on the playground, sustaining an accident on a bike or in a car, colliding with another child in daycare.  If you are concerned or unsure whether your child has suffered a concussion, please call for an appointment.

Additional information on concussions can be found at www.cdc.gov/Concussion including a "HEADs UP" online training course for coaches, youth, parents and athletes.

Please take the time to read information below on concussion from Centers For Disease Control (CDC).

Heads Up to Schools: KNOW YOUR CONCUSSION ABCs -A Fact Sheet for Parents

What is a concussion?

A concussion is a type of brain injury that changes the way the brain normally works.  A concussion is caused by a bump, or jolt to the head.  Concussions can also occur from a blow to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth.  Even what seems to be a mild bump to the head can be serious.

Concussions can have a more serious effect on a young developing brain and need to be addressed correctly.

Sports Physicals Reminder!

Just a quick reminder to schedule your child's sports/back to school physical during the summer break!  Most of the fall sports start in mid-August so it is a good idea to schedule these appointments early in the summer.

We provide a computerized printout of your child(ren)'s Health Summary or "school form".  This includes immunization & medical history, chronic medications, and the most recent physical.  It provides all the information required by camps, schools, or daycare providers and may be attached to any school or camp provided form.

Please contact our office at 978-975-3355 to schedule the appointment.
