Warts and Molluscum
- by Elisabeth Winterkorn, M.D.
Mollscum and Warts are common skin rashes that are caused by viruses. The rashes are harmless and will resolve on their own over time - though it could take months or years!
Molluscum (muh-luhs-kum) contagiosum (kən-tā-jē-ō-səm) looks like pearly- or flesh-colored bumps on the skin. These bumps can appear anywhere and often occur clusters of 10-20, but there can be many more.
Common warts are often skin-colored and feel rough, but they can be dark (brown or gray-black), flat, and smooth.

Children's Medical Office expanded our "Medical Home" with the addition of a Medical Home Care Coordinator last year.
WHAT IS "MEDICAL HOME"?
The medical home is a guiding model for health care transformation and improvement. The American Academy of Pediatrics defines the medical home as accessible, continuous, comprehensive, family-centered, well coordinated, and compassionate care.
MEDICAL HOME AT CMO!
CMO has always been a pioneer in the Medical Home initiative. Much of what has been described in the medical home model is already in place at our practice. We are a pilot practice in the Pediatric Physician’s Organization of Children’s Hospital (PPOC) effort to advance Medical Home initiative. Our goal is to provide the highest quality of coordinated medical care for all our patients. Over the last year our Medical Home initiative focused on:
- Expansion of our "clinical coordination" for children with special health care needs;
- Organization and distribution of our library of patient education handouts via website, email and in the office
- Website update on a regular basis
- Distribution of monthly informational newsletters
- Increase of our reporting from the Electronic Medical Records to study disease trends
WHAT'S NEXT?
- Test Run of a new parent to parent "Mentor" program
- A major new initiative with Children's Hospital to cut down on specialist visits, saving parent and patients time and health care dollars
- Educate our staff on "sensitivity" issues to better understand our parents and children with special health care needs
