Healthy Carolina Farmers Market
Dear Carolina parent,    

Greetings from Columbia! Monday was the midpoint in the semester, so expect your student to be busier than normal with exams and projects as spring break week approaches.

Monthly tips for parents. Visit the Office of Parents Programs website regularly to review monthly tips to help parents navigate the college experience at Carolina. Click here for complete information on what you need to know in March.

Date set for Parents Weekend 2012Parents Weekend

Mark your calendars for Parents Weekend 2012, to be held Sept. 21-23, 2012!

 

Registration is required to participate in the weekend's activities and will be available May 28 at 9 a.m. through August 31 at 4 p.m.
 

More information about registration will be available in the next few months, and all families of students returning to Carolina for next academic year will receive a postcard in the mail in May. Please continue to visit the Office of Parents Programs website for updates throughout the spring and summer!

Carolina Ties parent newsletter
Look for the Carolina Ties parents newsletter to be delivered to your home in the next week. This issue is a follow-up to the fall semester's newsletter on service and leadership and focuses on the many paths students take to gain leadership experience. Please spend some time reviewing the articles with your student. To view the newsletter online, click here.
Spring break is March 3-11
President Pastides calls for responsibility during spring break activities
Read President Harris Pastides' letter to the editor printed in the March 1 issue of The Daily Gamecock. Please use this letter as a way to continue the conversation with your student about being safe and responsible and avoiding high-risk behaviors. For more information about having this conversation, review the Talking Points brochure.

Residence hall closings
Spring break is next week. For students who live on campus, all residence halls (with the exceptions listed below) will close at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 3 and will re-open at noon on Sunday, March 11. The following residence halls will remain open during spring break: 820 Henderson, Bates West, DeSaussure, East Quad, Harper/Elliott, Maxcy, Pinckney/Legare, Rutledge, South Quad, Thornwell, West Quad and Woodrow.

Graduation Fair for May graduates
Students needing to purchase graduation supplies should visit the Graduation Fair at the University Bookstore at the Russell House which will be held March 21-22 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. More information>>

Study abroad sessions

Has your student studied abroad? Or is he/she planning to study abroad before graduation? The Study Abroad Office is offering a series of workshops to help students. 

  • Marketing Your International Experience -- March 15 at 3:30 p.m. in Legare 322. Sell your study abroad experience to employers and get an edge in the job market
  • Financing Study Abroad Part 3: Budgeting for Education Abroad -- April 12 at 3:30 p.m. in Legare 322. Prepare to have a great time abroad without breaking the bank.
     

Get involved with Homecoming 2012
Homecoming 2012 is set for Nov. 5-10, and the Homecoming Commission is seeking students to apply for the leadership positions which will plan the student events. Students will be able to contribute their talents to a team while learning the skills necessary to be an effective leader. The deadline to apply is March 2 at 4 p.m. For more information and to view the application, click here.


Mortar Board scholarships available
Mortar Board, a national senior honor society that recognizes students for their achievements in scholarship, leadership and service, is offering undergraduate scholarships and graduate fellowships. More information>>

 

iPads available for checkout

USC students can check out iPads, thanks to a partnership between Student Government and the Thomas Cooper Library. Twenty iPads are available for checkout from the library's Technology Lounge. The iPads come loaded with a wide range of applications for work and play. During the loan period, users can download additional applications. Students can check out iPads for three days and can renew them once per loan period. More information>>

 

Follow Carolina ALERT on social media
All students should sign up for Carolina ALERT to receive emergency communication by text message and email, and parents may sign up for these as well. Please make sure also to follow Carolina ALERT on Twitter and like Carolina ALERT on Facebook for follow-up messages to an emergency notification sent by text message and email and for more routine safety information and updates.

News from the Bursar

1098-T education tax forms were mailed to the student's permanent address on or before Jan. 31, 2012. If your student has not received this form, encourage him/her to stop by the Bursar's Office to request another copy.

University news updates
BP gift gives Cocky's Reading Express its own set of wheels
Cocky has its own set of wheels, thanks to a gift from BP. Officials from the University of South Carolina and BP joined with Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin and Cocky Feb. 21 to unveil a new 22-passenger Allstar Ford bus for USC's Cocky's Reading Express literacy program. Boasting a larger-than-life graphic of Cocky and the program's logo, the program's first bus rolled onto Greene Street before a crowd of cheering students, alumni and literacy leaders. Read more>>

Dean's List and President's Honor Roll announced

A lot of proud Gamecock families are beaming. The University of South Carolina has released the names of students who made the Dean's List and the President's Honor Roll for fall 2011.
To qualify for the Dean's List, sophomores, juniors and seniors must maintain a 3.5 grade point average while taking 12 hours. Freshmen must have a 3.25 GPA. President's Honor Roll students must make a 4.0. View the lists>>

Dance Marathon raises money for Palmetto Health Children's Hospital

USC's Dance Marathon, the largest student-led philanthropy in South Carolina, was held Feb. 24-25 at the Strom Thurmond Wellness and Fitness Center. Students raised $177,229.05 for Palmetto Health Children's Hospital. Read more>>

African American Presence Wall unveiled

On Feb. 29, the final day of Black History Month, the university unveiled the new African American Presence Wall. This series of eight panels mounted on the wall outside the Russell House Ballroom honors the contributions of African Americans to the university. Explore the online exhibit>>
