Homecoming
Dear Carolina parent,

The fall semester is starting to wind down, and Thanksgiving break is quickly approaching! As students are busy with final papers, projects, and exams, they may feel stressed or overwhelmed. The University offers many resources to help your students succeed, and we hope that you'll help point them in the right direction to meet their needs.

Encourage your student to continue going to class and make good use of his or her time to manage commitments. Also, if you feel your student needs extra help, suggest making an appointment with his or her professor or dropping by the Student Success Center or Academic Centers for Excellence. Students needing to talk with someone about their stress level can visit the Counseling and Human Development Center.

If you have any questions about resources available at Carolina, please call the Parents Assistance Line at 1-800-868-6752 or send us an e-mail at scparents@sc.edu.

Best wishes for the start of the holiday season later this month!
Parent feedback requested about CarolinaCard use off campus
As part of continual efforts to improve services to students and their families, the University is exploring possible changes to the CarolinaCard. In particular, the University is investigating the possibility of expanding the CarolinaCard to be used at select businesses off of the main campus based on student demand. (This might include gasoline, groceries, dry cleaning, and restaurants that offer late night hours of operation.) Feedback from parents of students who currently use the Card or might use the Card in the future is important in this process. The survey is anonymous, and data will not be made public but will be used solely by the committee that is evaluating CarolinaCard usage.

Monthly tips for parents
The Office of Parents Programs website has a new feature to help parents navigate the college experience at Carolina. Extensive monthly tips will be added throughout the year to help you stay updated on what you should be talking with your student about, things your student might be experiencing that month, and resources to help you with deadlines and questions you might have. If you have feedback on this new resource or suggestions for items that would help make this page more helpful, please let us know!

Thanksgiving break information
Residence hall closings
University of South Carolina residence halls (with the exceptions listed below) will close for Thanksgiving break at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 24, and will re-open at noon on Sunday, Nov. 28. For more information, click here.

The following residence halls will remain open throughout Thanksgiving break: Bates West, East Quad, French House, Horseshoe Apartments, South Quad, and West Quad.

Connect by Hertz program comes to Carolina
Students, faculty, and staff at the University of South Carolina will have access to cars they can rent by the hour through Connect by Hertz, a car share program that will be available beginning Monday, Nov. 15.

Committed to sustainability, Carolina has chosen to partner with Connect by Hertz to supply students and others on campus with environmentally friendly cars that are convenient for running errands and that encourage carpooling to off-campus locations.

USC is the first university or college in South Carolina to offer a car sharing program and to team up with Connect by Hertz. For more information about how students can rent cars through Connect by Hertz, click here.
Flu vaccine clinics continue in November
Student Health Services will offer three flu vaccine clinics this week. Please encourage your son or daughter to get the seasonal flu vaccine, follow routine prevention procedures, eat well, get plenty of rest and exercise, be aware of flu-like symptoms, and contact Student Health Services if he or she becomes ill.

Vaccines will be available for students on Nov. 2 from noon to 3 p.m. at the Thomson Student Health Center Patio (rain location is the Allergy/Immunization/Travel Clinic located in the Thomson Student Health Center on the first floor), Nov. 3 on the BA Building sidewalk from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (rain location is inside the BA Building), and Nov. 4 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Thomson Student Health Center Patio (rain location is the Allergy/Immunization/Travel Clinic located in the Thomson Student Health Center on the first floor).

The vaccine is $15 for students, and they must show their CarolinaCard to receive the vaccine. Dates and locations for additional vaccine clinics will be posted here.

Gamecock Tailgate Parties
Is your student looking for a place to tailgate before Carolina home football games this fall? All Carolina students are invited to tailgate at the Biscuit House parking lot, located in the Palmetto Health Gamecock Village just across Bluff Road from Williams-Brice Stadium, starting two and a half hours before kickoff. The tailgate parties are free for Carolina students when they show their CarolinaCard. Encourage your student to join us for food, games, music, and fun!

State of the University: 'Great things lie ahead'

Despite some of the steepest funding cuts experienced by any university in the country, the University of South Carolina is strong, focused, and determined not to allow circumstances to define its future, USC President Harris Pastides said Oct. 27 in his State of the University address.

"Our University has been stretched, pushed, tugged on, and tested in so many ways this past year, and while I don't expect that to change any time soon, I am confident that we are more ready, more resilient, and more resourceful than at any time in our past," Pastides said. "I am confident that great things lie ahead."

Pastides, who is starting his third year as USC's president, spoke to the University's faculty, staff, and students in the School of Law auditorium, updating them on a year that has seen deep cuts in funding but huge accomplishments in the classrooms, research labs, fund raising efforts, and on athletic fields.
