Dear Carolina parent,

It's starting to feel like fall on campus at Carolina! Next Thursday, Oct. 7, is the official midpoint of the fall semester, and Oct. 14-15 is fall break. Many students will be planning a trip home or to visit with friends from another University. Student Government offers a shuttle to the Columbia Metropolitan Airport during fall break, so encourage your student to make a reservation by noon on Oct. 12 if he or she would like to ride the shuttle. For more information, click here.

If you have any questions about resources available at Carolina, please call the Parents Assistance Line at 1-800-868-6752 or send us an e-mail at scparents@sc.edu
Flu vaccines available starting October 5
Student Health Services will hold flu vaccine clinics around campus beginning Oct. 5. Please encourage your son or daughter to get the seasonal flu vaccine, follow routine prevention procedures, eat well, get plenty of rest and exercise, be aware of flu-like symptoms, and contact Student Health Services if he or she becomes ill.

Vaccines will be available for students on Tuesday, Oct. 5 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on the Russell House Patio (rain location is Russell House, room 205) and Friday, Oct. 8 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Thomson Student Health Center Patio (rain location is the Allergy/Immunization/Travel Clinic located in the Thomson Student Health Center on the first floor).

The vaccine is $15 for students, and they must show their CarolinaCard to receive the vaccine. Dates and locations for additional vaccine clinics will be posted here.

Monthly tips for parents
The Office of Parents Programs website has a new feature to help parents navigate the college experience at Carolina. Extensive monthly tips will be added throughout the year to help you stay updated on what you should be talking with your student about, things your student might be experiencing that month, and resources to help you with deadlines and questions you might have. If you have feedback on this new resource or suggestions for items that would help make this page more helpful, please let us know!

University issues safety alert
In response to City of Columbia police reports of recent violence in Five Points, the University of South Carolina's Division of Law Enforcement and Safety has issued a special safety bulletin.

According to local police reports,
- There have been multiple incidents of violence in the Five Points area over the past several months.
- These incidents include shootings, armed robberies, and assaults.
- Most incidents have occurred after 1 a.m.
- Victims have been either alone or with few other people at the time of the incident.

University of South Carolina community members should keep the following safety tips in mind when visiting the Five Points area:
- Travel in large groups and never alone. The larger the group of people you are with, the better (four or more is best).
- All incidents have occurred after 1 a.m. It is recommended that you exercise extreme caution after this time.
- Travel on major sidewalks along major streets and avoid shortcuts. Well lit and well traveled routes are best. Please avoid traveling on the path that leads across the railroad tracks and Laurens Street, from the 2000 block of College Street to the 1900 block of College Street, as this area has been particularly prone to violent crime.
- If you see suspicious activity or persons, or if you hear what you believe to be gunshots, seek safety in a well populated building and call the police by dialing 911.
- Do not allow strangers to ride in your vehicle or accept rides from persons you do not know well.
- If you choose to drink alcohol, drink responsibly and do not allow yourself to become intoxicated.
- Do not accept alcoholic or soft drinks from persons you do not know well and never leave your drink unattended.
- If you become the victim of a crime, call 911 immediately and give detailed information concerning description of suspect(s), suspect direction of travel, and any other pertinent information regarding the incident.
- The University has and encourages the use of several available shuttle services for transportation to and around campus (Cocky's Caravan, the Late Night Shuttle, and the APO Shuttle). For more information about these shuttles, click here.
AlcoholEdu® deadline is October 15
All students under the age of 23 who are new to the University of South Carolina Columbia campus are required to complete AlcoholEdu® for College to educate students about alcohol and its effects on the mind and body. Data collected through this alcohol education course will enable the University to better serve the community and provide services and resources to address student needs.

How do students take AlcoholEdu®?
Students should have completed part one already, so remind your student to complete part two by October 15. (Students should log in to VIP using their VIP ID and password.) Failure to successfully complete both parts will result in a hold being placed on the student's registration for their second semester classes.

Can parents take AlcoholEdu®?
Parents can take the AlcoholEdu® course, and it's a great way to encourage more discussion about the risks and consequences of alcohol and other drugs. To log in, click here. Enter 10P218663PARENT in the new user log-in field to create an account.

Order the Official University of South Carolina Ring
Attention parents of students with 60 or more hours of credit! Your student can purchase the Official University of South Carolina Ring during the Official Carolina Ring Week Oct. 4-9 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Russell House first floor lobby.

All students who reserve rings during the Official Ring Weeks are invited to participate in the Fall Ring Ceremony on Tuesday, Nov. 30, on the Horseshoe. Each ring will be presented by President Pastides, and family and friends are encouraged to attend. More information>>
Gamecock Tailgate Parties
Is your student looking for a place to tailgate before Carolina home football games this fall? All Carolina students are invited to tailgate at the Biscuit House parking lot, located in the Palmetto Health Gamecock Village just across Bluff Road from Williams-Brice Stadium, starting two and a half hours before kickoff. The tailgate parties are free for Carolina students when they show their CarolinaCard. Encourage your student to join us for food, games, music, and fun!

'Book 'em, Cocky': Band in 'Hawaii 5-0' theme challenge
