Gamecocks win the national championship!
Dear Carolina parent,

The excitement in Columbia is incredible after the men's baseball team won the national championship on Tuesday night! Nearly 14,000 Gamecock fans packed inside the Colonial Life Arena on Wednesday afternoon to welcome the team home to Columbia. (Click here for more videos from the celebration.) Governor Mark Sanford has declared today, July 1, as Gamecock Baseball National Champions Day. The Gamecock flag is raised above the Statehouse, and Coach Ray Tanner will receive the Order of the Palmetto, the state's highest civilian award. The City of Columbia will honor the team Friday with a downtown parade beginning at noon at Main and Laurel streets and ending at Main and Gervais. Championship gear is available, so click here to order.

Congratulations to the Gamecock baseball team for bringing home a national championship to Carolina!

Board of Trustees approves budget for 2010-11
The University of South Carolina's Board of Trustees approved a 2010-11 operating budget on June 25 that balances several critical needs of the University with efforts to keep tuition as low as possible without compromising students' educational experience. Undergraduate tuition and required fees on the Columbia campus will go up by 6.9 percent.

University President Harris Pastides said that he is heartened by the record number of freshmen who plan to attend the University of South Carolina in the fall and is committed to providing them the best educational experience possible.

"The state's bleak budget picture continues to impact us, and once again we have made some gut-wrenching choices," Pastides said. "However, it is imperative that we maintain the quality that we are known for and continue to provide an outstanding educational experience for our students. The record number of freshmen from South Carolina who plan to attend the University this fall is a ringing endorsement of the University and its mission, and the confidence that they have put in Carolina is a reminder that we cannot falter in our commitment to educating the people of our state."

Pastides said that at the Columbia campus, a tuition increase of 16 percent would have been required to restore the University's 2010 base budget, a figure out of the question in order to keep education affordable. Since the 2008 fiscal year, the University's state appropriations have been cut by nearly $105 million. Read more>>
Parents Calendar and Handbook 2010-11
The Parents Calendar and Handbook 2010-11 is available on our website! This publication features important University dates, an A to Z resource guide to the University, and much more to help you navigate the 2010-11 academic year.
AlcoholEdu® requirement for incoming students
All incoming students under the age of 23 who are new to the University of South Carolina Columbia campus are required to complete AlcoholEdu® for College to educate students about alcohol and its effects on the mind and body. Data collected through this alcohol education course will enable the University to better serve the community and provide services and resources to address student needs.

How do students take AlcoholEdu®?
Students should log in to VIP using their VIP ID and password on or after July 15. Then, they should follow the link provided in VIP to AlcoholEdu® for College to create a username and password. Students entering in fall 2010 must complete part one by August 15, 2010, and part two by October 15, 2010. Failure to successfully complete both parts will result in a hold being placed on the student's registration for their second semester classes.

Can parents take AlcoholEdu®?
Parents can take the AlcoholEdu® course on or after July 15, and it's a great way to encourage more discussion about the risks and consequences of alcohol and other drugs. To log in, click here. Enter 10P218663PARENT in the new user log-in field to create an account.
