Dear Carolina parent,
Greetings from Columbia! Today is the midpoint in the semester, so expect your student to be busier than normal with exams and projects. Also, spring break is next week. For students who live on campus, all residence halls (with the exceptions listed below) will close for spring break at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 6 and will re-open at noon on Sunday, March 14. The following residence halls will remain open during the break: Bates House, Bates West, East Quad, French House, Honors Residence, Horseshoe Apartments, The Roost, South Quad and West (Green) Quad. Look for the Carolina Ties parents newsletter to be delivered to your home in the next week. Important census information for students
Once every 10 years, the U.S. Census Bureau takes a snapshot of everyone residing in the United States. People should be counted where they live and sleep most of the year, so your student should complete the census questionnaire he/she receives at his/her local University of South Carolina address. Can parents include college students on their census questionnaire? If a child is not living with his/her parents during the school year, then no, parents should not include him/her on their census questionnaire. The Census Bureau conducts counts of people where they live and sleep most of the year. Parents should leave students off of their forms, even if they will return to live at home after they leave college. Otherwise, they may be counted twice. Census data affect and inform: - college tuition grant and loan programs; - decisions about funding for critical services in your academic community, like transportation, public safety, medical care, and road repairs; - important research done by college faculty, students, librarians, and community leaders; and - your voice in Congress and in the state and local community.
The 2010 census forms will be mailed to households in March and should be mailed back by April 1, 2010, which is National Census Day. For more information about the 2010 Census on Campus, click here. |

New Community Internship Program announced
"Students with an internship or co-op experience have a significant advantage in the job market over students who do not have experience. It is imperative that students get experience before graduation," said Tom Halasz, director of the University of South Carolina Career Center. The Career Center recently launched the Community Internship Program (CIP), which gives students the opportunity to earn a minimum of $10 per hour while completing an internship in South Carolina. CIP will begin this summer, and its goal is to help students gain necessary work experience so they will be more marketable to future employers. Learn more>> |

Carolina Day at the Statehouse returns March 24
Alumni, faculty, staff, and supporters of the University of South Carolina will march to the Statehouse once again on Wednesday, March 24 for the annual Carolina Day at the Statehouse. Participants in the event, which is sponsored by the Carolina Alumni Association's Carolina Action Network (CAN), attend each year to meet with legislators to advocate for support of public education. CAN advocates are a network of volunteers who work together to increase awareness of legislative issues affecting the state colleges and universities. Advocates communicate with their elected officials in various ways throughout the year, including the annual event in March. Anyone with an interest in the University of South Carolina can become an advocate. The network includes parents, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends of the University.
