Holidays at Carolina
Dear Carolina parent,

The end of the semester is quickly approaching! This Friday, Dec. 4, is the last day of classes, and exams start on Monday, Dec. 7. December commencement will be held on Monday, Dec. 14.

Now is the time to talk with your student to establish plans for his or her trip home for winter break. When students return home for the break, they may have anxiety about losing their independence and may be concerned about adjusting to life under their parents' roofs again. We encourage you to have a discussion with your student ahead of time about your expectations while he or she is living at home.

The Office of Parents Programs will remain open through Tuesday, Dec. 22 at 5 p.m. We will close briefly for the holidays and will re-open on Monday, Jan. 4 at 8:30 a.m. If you need immediate assistance during these University holidays, please contact the police department at 803-777-4215.

Have a wonderful holiday season!

H1N1 vaccines available through Student Health Services
As the parent of a student, you hold tremendous sway with the choices they make that affect their health. One of the most important choices students can make now is to get the H1N1 influenza virus vaccine through the University of South Carolina's Student Health Services. Not only is the vaccine the best way to protect your child against H1N1 influenza, it is the best way to halt the spread of the virus throughout our campus community.

Ask your child if he or she has been vaccinated against the H1N1 influenza virus on campus, and if not, urge him or her to do so. When the University receives a vaccine shipment and schedules special H1N1 vaccine clinics, the information is posted online at www.sc.edu/flu. Encourage your child to check the site frequently and to get vaccinated.
Winter break residence hall closings
University of South Carolina residence halls (with the exceptions listed below) will officially close at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2009, and will re-open at noon on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010. Residents are requested to leave 24 hours after their last scheduled exam.

Please encourage your student to do the following before leaving for the holidays: close and lock all windows and security screens; unplug all appliances; clean out the refrigerator, prop the door open and place a towel under the door (in case of power failure); empty the trash; pull the blinds and curtains closed; turn the heat to a low setting; turn off all lights; and lock the room.

(The following residence halls will remain open during the break: Bates House, Bates West, East Quad, French House, Honors Residence, Horseshoe Apartments, The Roost, South Quad, and West Quad.)

Capstone power outage during winter break
Capstone will have a scheduled power outage during winter break. Residents of Capstone should check their University e-mail accounts for specific instructions as it relates to this power outage. If students have questions, they can contact their resident mentor (RM) or residence life coordinator.
New student e-mail system starts Jan. 5
Beginning with the spring 2010 semester, Carolina students will begin using a new e-mail system. This system, called Outlook Live@edu, offers students a much larger inbox and optional features such as online storage and social networking tools. Students will begin using their new e-mail on Jan. 5, 2010.

What's changing?
All Carolina students will have a new e-mail address: NETWORKUSERNAME@email.sc.edu (substituting the network username). Any e-mail sent to an @mailbox.sc.edu account will be forwarded to the @email.sc.edu account during the spring 2010 semester. Students will need to change their network username password before using the new system. This can be done through VIP using the technology tab.

Students can log in to their new student e-mail account starting Jan. 5, 2010, by going to www.sc.edu/studentemail. For more information, click here.
