Fall at Carolina
Dear Carolina parent,

The fall semester is starting to wind down, and Thanksgiving break is quickly approaching! As students are busy with final papers, projects, and exams, they may feel stressed or overwhelmed. The University offers many resources to help your students succeed, and we hope that you'll help point them in the right direction to meet their needs.

Encourage your student to continue going to class and make good use of his or her time to manage commitments. Also, if you feel your student needs extra help, suggest making an appointment with his or her professor or dropping by the Student Success Center or Academic Centers for Excellence. Students needing to talk with someone about their stress level can visit the Counseling and Human Development Center

Best wishes for the start of the holiday season later this month!
Date set for Parents Weekend 2010
Parents Weekend logoMark your calendars for Parents Weekend 2010, to be held Sept. 17-19, 2010! More information will be available in the spring, and all families of students returning to Carolina for the next academic year will receive a postcard in the mail in May. Registration will begin on May 31, 2010, so continue to visit www.sa.sc.edu/parents for updates throughout the spring and summer!
Flu update
The number of confirmed cases of H1N1 flu on the University of South Carolina campus remains low, and all cases have been mild. Student Health Services has received its first allotments of the H1N1 vaccine and are distributing them according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines. Vaccine clinics will be scheduled as supplies are made available to the University. Information about those clinics will be posted here.

The Thomson Student Health Center is currently out of the seasonal flu vaccine. While no date has been determined for delivery of additional flu vaccines, as soon as that information becomes available, it will be posted on the Student Health Services Seasonal Flu page.

When your student comes home for the Thanksgiving holidays, help him or her keep healthy by following these tips:
-If your student hasn't already received his or her seasonal or H1N1 flu vaccine, schedule an appointment with your family doctor or local healthcare provider.
-Frequent hand washing and use of a hand sanitizer can prevent the live virus from spreading. Have hand sanitizer available near the entryways of your house and remind everyone to use it on their way in and out. If you're putting a care package together for your student to bring back to school, hand sanitizer is a great item to include.
-Encourage your student to eat right to keep his or her immunity boosted. Whole grains, fruit, vegetables and proper hydration help the body keep its defenses up. If you cook together, plan meals that incorporate healthy items. Try some new recipes together. If you're sending food back with your student, make it healthy.

For additional information on seasonal and H1N1 flu, including prevention tips, visit the University's flu update Web page.

Gamecocks to team up with Wounded Warriors for Florida gameUniversity of South Carolina Gamecocks
Under Armour recently announced its partnership with the Wounded Warrior Project, a not-for-profit organization that provides programs and services for injured service members and their families. The two have joined forces in conjunction with the University of South Carolina and University of Maryland football teams to recognize the sacrifices made by those who have served and those that continue to serve in our nation's Armed Forces.

On Nov. 14, in honor of our troops, the University of South Carolina Gamecocks and University of Maryland Terrapins will wear specially designed head-to-toe uniforms for their gameday matchups versus the University of Florida Gators and Virginia Tech Hokies, respectively. The teams will take the field in black and desert camouflage uniforms featuring the Wounded Warrior Project logo. The uniforms will also have a unique twist; a core value embellishment - Duty, Honor, Courage, Commitment, Integrity, Country, and Service - will replace the players' last names on the back of each jersey. Both games will be nationally televised.
