Impact - See how we're improving South Carolina
No university in America has greater impact on the educational, economic and health care fortunes of its state than the University of South Carolina. Through our eight campuses, we create many paths to opportunity, which translates our education and research into tangible outcomes that improve lives - in South Carolina and beyond. Dear Carolina parent,

Move-in Day at the University of South Carolina is just two weeks away on Saturday, Aug. 15! As you and your student prepare for the transition of moving to campus, we are here to help with any questions you may have. Call the Parents Assistance Line at 1-800-868-6752 or send an e-mail to scparents@sc.edu.

Is your student living on campus? Make sure to read University Housing's Move-in Guide for more details about moving in! Also, visit the USC Welcome Web site for complete details about getting settled on campus.

As the semester begins, encourage your student to be independent and act responsibly. If your student faces a problem, point him or her in the right direction but refrain from "coming to the rescue." By allowing your student to solve his or her own problems, you will demonstrate that you have confidence in him or her!

New publications for parents available online
The Parents Calendar and Handbook 2009-2010 is now available on our Web site! This publication features important University dates, an A to Z resource guide to the University, and much more to help you navigate the 2009-2010 academic year. Earlier this year, the 2008-2009 edition received the Award of Excellence in the institutional publications category from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) district III.

Talking Points, a joint publication of the Office of Parents Programs and the Office of Substance Abuse Prevention and Education, also is now available online. This publication is mailed to families of incoming first-year students to encourage them to have conversations with their students about the risks and consequences of using alcohol and other drugs, but it also is relevant for all families to discuss with their students.
Move-in weekend activities
Make plans to stop by the Parents Information Tent in front of the Russell Carolina Welcome 2009House on Move-in Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to get more information about the Office of Parents Programs and the Department of Student Life! Pick up water and soft drinks, and cool off with the misting fan while listening to some good music! We'll also have maps of campus and the city of Columbia and can help you get where you need to go!

You are invited to New Student Convocation, the official academic welcome to the University, on Sunday, August 16 at 4 p.m. at the Carolina Coliseum. Prior to convocation, the colleges and schools host receptions for families, and immediately following the ceremony is a reception with President Pastides and other University administrators. Click here for more information and to RSVP.

Also, encourage your student to participate in the many Carolina Welcome activities that will be offered during the week leading up to the start of classes. It's a great time to make new friends and get involved in campus life!

DOJ announces agreement on Close-Hipp Building lease
In one of the most significant developments for the University of South Carolina in decades, the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) announced July 20 that it has agreed to a 20-year lease for the Close-Hipp Building that houses the Darla Moore School of Business.

The proposed move, announced at a news conference in Columbia, will bring more than 250 high-paying jobs to Columbia and allow the University to construct a new building for the Darla Moore School of Business in the heart of Innovista, the University's innovative research district. University and DOJ officials said the DOJ has agreed to lease the building to house staff from the Executive Office for United States Attorneys in Washington, D.C. Read more>>
