Facts about Skin Cancer

 Not all causes of skin cancer are known, but many cases of skin cancer occur in those areas of the body that have been heavily exposed to sunlight over the years. The skin tans when UV radiation is absorbed.  Sunburns are thought to increase your risk of skin cancer, including melanoma.  But UV exposure can raise skin cancer risk even without causing a sunburn.

What are the signs of possible skin cancer? 

• Any unusual growth or color change in the skin
• The appearance of a small, shiny, pearly bump on exposed skin areas, that may also bleed.
• Nodules, or scaly red patches with well-defined outlines-usually appears on the lips, face, or tips of the ears.
• A mole, or skin near a mole, that changes in size, shape, color or sensation.

If you notice any of these changes, see a physician immediately.  Remember, early diagnosis and treatment results in very high cure rates for most skin cancers.

What can people who spend a lot of time outdoors do if they hope to avoid skin cancer?

• Apply sunscreen at least daily to all exposed skin areas.  After  washing a body part reapply the  lotion.  Use a sunscreen rating (SPF) of at least 15.  Fair-skinned people should use a screen rate SPF 25-30.  If appropriate clothing is worn, sunscreens are only necessary for the face, neck, and hands.
• Whenever outside, wear a loose-fitting long sleeved shirt and long pants, as well as a hat to protect the scalp.
