Summer Safety Tips -
Camping
Camping is a great way to enjoy the outdoors with friends and family. To help ensure your trip is safe and healthy, follow these tips from the CDC:
- Get vaccinated. Campers may get injured or sick due to their activities or close living conditions. Ask your doctor or nurse what vaccinations are recommended, i.e. tetanus, meningitis, etc., and make sure your vaccinations are up-to-date.
- Prepare healthy and safe food. Pack foods in tight, waterproof bags or containers and keep them in an insulated cooler. Wash hands and surfaces often, and separate raw foods from cooked foods.
- Practice fire safety. Use a campfire pit away from overhanging tree branches and make sure it has a metal fire ring or is encircled with rocks. Keep a bucket of water and a shovel nearby. Use fireproof cooking equipment, and never leave a campfire unattended. Before you leave, be sure to put out your campfire completely.
- Protect against carbon monoxide poisoning. Never use fuel-burning equipment such as gas stoves, heaters, lanterns, or charcoal grills inside a tent, camper, or other enclosed shelter. Rather than relying on fuel-burning appliances for heat, campers should bring adequate bedding and clothing.
- Avoid wild animals and protect family pets. Some wild animals carry diseases dangerous to people. Avoid touching, feeding, and getting close to wild animals. Keep foods stored in sealed containers and out of reach of animals. Make sure your pets are vaccinated, watch them closely, and check them for ticks (remove promptly if found). Make sure pets have plenty of water, food, and shelter.
- Protect yourself from the sun/heat. Drink plenty of alcohol-free and sugar-free fluids, and don't wait until you're thirsty to drink. Wear light-colored, lightweight, and loose-fitting clothing, rest often in shady areas, and use a broad-spectrum (against UVA and UVB rays) sunscreen and lip balm.
- Be prepared. Always be prepared for the unexpected. Before you leave, check the weather report, learn about security at your camp location, and tell family and friends what your plans are. Be sure to bring along a supply kit that includes a first aid kit, compass or GPS, map, flashlight, blankets, batteries, food, clothes, and medication. Know whom to contact should issues arise. When you return home, check for ticks, poison ivy, and other problems.
