The day in 2001 that Pathways Shelter moved into its current facilities in Framingham, its director, Marita Boyd was giving tours to local dignitaries and representatives of the state government. "But our real job in the future," Marita reminded the visitors, "is to eventually close this and all shelters, to have permanent housing for these families, not just one room." Sadly, Pathways Shelter and all the other family shelters across the state are doing a booming business, as the number of homeless families continues to rise in the face of ever increasing economic uncertainty. Over three thousand families were served by shelters in Massachusetts last year. In a recent conversation with Marita Boyd, the director of Pathways Shelter for some 15 years now, she updated us on who she sees at the shelter.
