Scituate Animal Shelter E-News

Dear Friends,

June 26th was filled with fun and festivities as we celebrated the first anniversary in our new home.  Check out the event photos at Scituate Mariner's event photo gallery and read more below.  Thanks to the many community members who helped make the day so special.  What will make next year's June event memorable?  How about recognizing the Shelter's 5,000th pet adoption?  Now THAT's something to celebrate!

The Shelter will be taking a short break from hosting major events and publishing e-news during the Summer but we never take a break from giving the shelter animals the very best care possible.  We are honored to be able to improve many animals' lives - one adoption at a time.  As always, thank you for your support.

Animal News
  • HOORAY for Desmond the kitten!  Desmond, the featured adoptable animal in last month's newsletter, was recently adopted.  Even with feline herpes, Desmond was irresistible to his new mom, Deb C.!  Deb reports that Desmond "is a love" and she's thrilled to have him.  We wish them much happiness together.
  • Available for adoption right now are some wonderful pets including sweet cats and playful kittens (17 of them!) and a smart young Beagle mix named Snoopy.  All are waiting for a good home.  Meet them and others at Petfinder.com or visit us during open hours (below) for the most current information.
  • Featured Adoptable Animals: Puppies Faith, Hope, Charity, Lovey and Chance.  Five adorable Lab mix pups were transferred to us from another rescue organization.  They're cute!  They're cuddly!  They're up-to-date on vaccinations and... they're ready to be placed in homes with folks who understand the time, energy and patience required to raise a puppy and who are ready for the 10-15 year commitment of dog ownership.  A fenced yard is preferred for our playful puppies, and a training class is a MUST.
  • Shelter's resident feral cats venture outside in NEW enclosure thanks to a wonderful donation.  Don't miss the magical moments of the cats' first steps back outdoors recorded on "cat cam"  Video part 1 (10 minutes long) and video part 2 .
  • Shelter's dogs have NEW play yard!  A generous friend of the Shelter recently donated a large fenced area for our dogs to exercise off-leash, and the dogs are so happy.  Stay tuned for the upcoming video of canine playtime in their new space.

Recent Events
  • "Celebrate the Animals" 1st Anniversary Open House Thanks to all of the guests, volunteers and sponsors who made the community event a huge success.  One of the highlights of the day was a live demonstration by the Scituate K9 Unit - Officer Brian McLaughlin and K-9 officer Felix showed the crowd a powerful "take down" maneuver on Sgt. Joseph O'Brien of the Massachusetts Department of Corrections (the "suspect").  Golden Retriever Greta quickly found a small amount of drugs which had been planted on one of the Officers, and a Black Labrador K-9 identified a small stash of drugs hidden in a police cruiser car.  The top-notch teamwork between K-9s and handlers made it easy to see how their involvement in local police work promotes a high level of safety in our community.  Thanks also to Jim Armstrong and his brother, Joe, for donating their time to provide delightful music throughout the day.  Kudos also to Jim's students for their performances!
Did You Know
  • Safe space  This year, the Shelter had a lower number of phone calls for lost pets after the July 4th weekend.  Your pets thank you for providing them with a safe and quiet refuge during summer activities like fireworks.  Remember, your pet may require the same refuge during thunderstorms too.
  • Reliable ID  In the event your pet goes missing, it can be returned to you more quickly if it is wearing proper identification.  Please be sure your pet's ID includes basic information including your cell phone number.  See one of our favorite ID dog collars (this martingale style also makes it difficult for your dog to slip out of this collar), and consider microchipping as a highly reliable form of ID.
  • Vacations  It's getting easier to vacation WITH your pet.  Find pet-friendly accommodations at www.petvacationhomes.com or even at certain hotel properties like some of Marriott's Residence Inns.
  • Boarding  Due to the overwhelming number of animals at the Shelter right now, we will not be accepting any more dog boarding reservations this summer.
  • No Pet Sales  A law was proposed recently to stop the sale of small companion animals in San Francisco, CA in an effort to curb impulse pet purchases which can lead to the animals ending up in shelters. The proposed law is also intended to reduce the demand of pets from puppy and kitten mills.  The outcome of the law is undecided at this time.
  • Fisher Cats  Reports of fisher cats in Scituate have increased.  Fishers can be aggressive and have been known to kill cats and even small dogs.  For your pet's safety, do not leave small dogs unattended in the yard, and keep cats indoors.
