Prairie Harvest Celebration

Table at Prairie Harvest
The Prairie Harvest Celebration is our main fundraiser of the year which helps make projects such as the proposed Fields of Cambridge Nature Preserve and Conservation@Home possible.

This year's Prairie Harvest is Sunday, September 18th, and will take place at a beautiful private property, the Donnelley Family's Windblown Hill, which is just north of Libertyville. We hope you'll mark your calendar for this wonderful event!

Cool Summer Reading
 The River Why Book

Pick up a copy of The River Why to enjoy as you finish out the summer! We will be having a book discussion on November 18 moderated by Jim Robinett of the Shedd Aquarium. The River Why is a novel of fishing, life, love and passion for the great outdoors. It's a dip into cool water in this summer heat.

Our work continues to preserve a rare prairie
Turks cap lily

This Turk's cap lily and other native prairie plants were in colorful bloom last week at the proposed Fields of Cambridge Nature Preserve.

We continue to make progress with a group of public and private partners in our effort to create and buffer a new Illinois Nature Preserve in west Waukegan.  It's one of the most interesting and complicated projects the Liberty Prairie Conservancy has been involved in but it's well worth it. The site includes a high quality sedge meadow and prairie, home to some rare and endangered species of plants.

Staff member Nathan Aaberg was out at the site last week with his camera to capture some of the plants in bloom like the pictured Turk's cap lily. The New Jersey tea, swamp milkweed, wild bergamot, mountain mint, Illinois rose, and starry campion were also showing off their colors. Check out more photos on our Facebook page.
Conservation@Home comes to Lake County
Earlier this year we received a grant from the Grand Victoria Foundation to bring Conservation@Home to Lake County. It is an exciting program that provides property owners with the resources and support needed to become more eco-friendly in their lawn and garden practices. Qualifying properties can earn Conservation@Home certification. We are still working on the details of the program which is scheduled to launch this fall. Nearly 100 people have already signed up for a site visit!
Louise Wood
Louise Wood shows off her new native plantings during one of our recent Eco-Yard Tours. Our next Eco-Yard Tour is in Highland Park on August 6th.

Did a storm damage a tree in your yard? Plant a native species in its place.

Small OakIf you lost a favorite tree in a recent storm (and who didn't?), consider replacing it this fall with a native species such as an oak, hickory or musclewood. Native trees and shrubs are beautiful, hardy, long-lived and fabulous for the songbirds, and autumn is a great time to plant them. For ideas, visit the Possibility Place website.

The Liberty Prairie Conservancy is growing
If you haven't been to our office or one of our events lately, you may not recognize our new and growing staff.

Matt Enquist joins the Conservancy as our Fundraising Assistant. Matt lives in Grayslake and is a recent graduate of North Park University.

Our new Land Stewardship Coordinator position will be filled by Lynda Wallis. Lynda has a long history with the Conservancy producing beautiful artwork and drawings that appear in our newsletter. She will work with Sarah Surroz on land management and our new Conservation@Home program. Sarah is the Conservancy's Conservation and Outreach Manager.

Tim Girmscheid, our Director of Land Preservation, celebrates his 10-year anniversary with the Conservancy this month, and Nathan Aaberg has recently been promoted to Associate Director. Congratulations to Tim and Nathan and a sincere welcome to Matt and Lynda.
