March 2012

Mark Munoz

Greetings,

Hope you were able to make it to the 2012 ADDY Awards Gala - the SOLD OUT event was awesome!  It was great to see everyone and celebrate every win.

Congratulations to all the ADDY winners - the acknowledgement is well deserved!

This year the focus of the competition was all about the work. Recognizing the sacrifices and struggles to get great ideas off the ground, and then, watching those ideas take flight and soar.

From hosting the event in a more creative-centric space (The Duce), developing new partnerships to elevate the event and presentation (this year's 32 ADDY sponsors and supporters were crucial in making the celebration a top-notch event), to how we showcased the work (utilizing technology and expanding the time to review the winning entries), I hope we met your expectations at the 27th Annual ADDY Awards Gala.

And speaking of innovating how we showcased the work, the ADDY Committee created a high-tech interactive exhibit display to view the online work, video reel to view every broadcast entry, a live twitter feed for audience participation and, of course, the multi-screen stage monitor for the presentation. And the Master of Ceremonies for the night, Dale Castro, was one of our own - Dale, you rocked it!

Be sure to check the ad club's website for an Official List of Winners, 2012 ADDY Winner Book, and, coming soon, ADDY event photos.

Finally, I would like to give special thanks to the 2012 ADDY Planning Committee for their dedication, creativity and hard work in planning this event over the past 6 months; I am truly amazed by you all. Thanks to Jon Arvizu, Trapdoor Studio, and Bob Case for creating the custom and one-of-kind special awards. And a very special thanks goes to Pamela Loughman, AAFMP Executive Volunteer, ADDY co-chairs, Bob Case and Diana Barrow, and The Lavidge Company creative team for their vision, leadership and hard work.

I look forward to our local winning entries compete at the District 12 ADDY competition in Utah. And seeing work from our market continue to take home ADDY Gold.

Best,

Mark Anthony Munoz

2012 Creative Director of the Year

Congratulations to Tom Ortega, RIESTER
2012 Creative Director of the Year

Tom Ortega has been one of Phoenix's most talented ad men for two and half decades. He is a Partner at RIESTER and serves as Chief Creative Officer supervising all creative staff and work produced from three offices in Phoenix, Los Angeles and Salt Lake City. Not only is he the hardest working man in advertising, he is one of the most selfless.

Tom first moved to the Valley in the early 1980s from his native Texas to join Phillips Ramsey as a copywriter. There he wrote award-winning campaigns for Safeway, PetSmart and Doubletree Hotels. He spent many subsequent years as the top freelance writer in town, helping establish creative credentials for many local upstart ad agencies.

RIESTER attributes some of its big account wins to Tom Ortega's leadership, including Hormel Foods,  First Solar, Nationwide Insurance and MidFirst Bank. As a result, Tom has provided more opportunities for Phoenix-based creative talent to work on larger client brands while attracting new creatives to Phoenix. Although his schedule forces him to actually jog between conference rooms and airports, Tom always makes time for his colleagues-both personally and professionally.

So many of us owe Tom a debt of tremendous gratitude. The folks at RIESTER know it would not have become the agency it is today without Tom Ortega.

2012 ADDY Special Awards

Truly Unique Awards for Top Honors

Bob Case, Illustrator extraordinaire, and the multi-talented illustrative designer, Jonathan Arvizu, were the artistic geniuses who created the one-of-a-kind custom awards presented to the top winners of the night.

Monsilkscreen prints: hand cut paper stencils combined with richly colored screenprinting inks, metallics, even gold & silver leafing. Ink is applied to an open screen by brushing, dripping, squeegee or all three.

Custom prints were also created for display throughout the venue to support the theme of the show. Since many have asked, how to get one of their own, Jon has made a limited number of prints available for purchase.

White House Endorses DAA Self-Regulatory Program

February 22 was a significant day for the advertising industry as the White House, Department of Commerce and Federal Trade Commission endorsed the Digital Advertising Alliance self-regulatory program for online interest based advertising. This groundbreaking program helps engender consumer trust by giving consumers the opportunity to protect their privacy and allowing them to establish control over their reception of online behavioral advertising.

The announcement marks an important milestone as industry and the government work together to protect consumer privacy and create trust, thereby helping to insure that the free Internet - like other free media, supported primarily by advertising - continues to flourish, grow and innovate.

The Internet is a dynamic and growing segment of the economy. According to a recent study by Harvard Business School Professors John Deighton and John Quelch the advertising-supported Internet represents 2.1% of total U.S. gross domestic product. A total of 3.1 million Americans are employed thanks to interactive advertising.

In January, the DAA launched Your AdChoices, a new consumer education campaign and website to inform consumers about interest based advertising and how they can take greater control of their online privacy.

In addition to the American Advertising Federation, the DAA consists of the American Association of Advertising Agencies (4As), the Association of National Advertisers (ANA), the Direct Marketing Association (DMA), the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB), and the Network Advertising Initiative (NAI).
