All the Usual Suspects are expected to Top Super Bowl ads

During a recent interview with Bob McClay/KTAR, Louie Moses of Moses
Louise Moses
Louie Moses
Anshell talked about the ads he feels will draw the most attention at this year's competition between the Steelers and the Packers.

"I think the Budweiser spots are always the ones people watch for," Moses said. "I think the bar's set pretty high for them. I think Doritos and also Pepsi always seems to come up with something. I'm not really looking forward to any of the e-trades or any of the financial institutions. I think they're all pretty conservative right now."

Moses said the best ads are the ones that tell a story. "The special effects, we're kind of overrun with that now. The crazy animals talking and things like that. It only works if the story's interesting. I think consistently over the years, the ones we remember from day to day, after, it's the ones that had a good story."

Social media is key to Super Bowl ad strategies

Taking full advantage of Super Bowl ads means generating weeks of buzz leading up to the broadcast and, now, following up with a digital interactive and social component, said Scott Keogh, chief marketing officer of Audi, which has booked the spot for the opening break in the game. This year, Audi is being joined by several brands that are adding social media components to their Super Bowl ads. Advertising Age (tiered subscription model) (1/31)

Google and Mozilla First to Give Consumers a "Do Not Track" Internet Option

The FTC has raised the possibility of a do-not-track mechanism which would allow consumers to opt-out of targeted online advertising. Mozilla and Google have both announced that they will include do-not-track options in their products. Google unveiled a "Keep My Opt-Outs" extension on its Chrome browser, which allows consumers to permanently block cookies. Microsoft has also announced that the next edition of Internet Explorer will have an ad tracking block feature. AAF and many other associations recently announced a new self-regulatory program which would allow consumers to opt-out of being tracked for online behavioral advertising.

NBC-Comcast merger gets FCC approval

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is allowing Comcast and NBC Universal to merge, with certain conditions. Comcast will own 51% of the entity, which will include the nation's largest broadband Internet provider, one of four national broadcast networks, local NBC affiliates, film studios and a theme park. With certain members of Congress worry that the merger will lead to higher bills and less choice for consumers, Comcast-NBCU is promising to maintain the current level of local programming, increase children's and independent programming, and make Internet access more affordable and available to approximately 2.5 million low income households. The FCC is requiring that the venture ensure its content is available to competing cable providers as well as rival online video sources for at least seven years in an effort to limit Comcast's influence over the growing online video market.

Indecency Battle Ongoing

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and U.S. Department of Justice have asked the 2nd Court of Appeals to review a July ruling that overturned the Commission's ability to fine broadcasters for indecent content. Meanwhile, the Parents Television Council is hoping Congress will keep indecency off the airwaves. New House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton, R-Mich., has authored indecency bills in the past and has hinted he may do so again. Upton has promised to curb indecency in public broadcasting, protect children in online environments, and support transparency in the video game rating system.
