THE PREZ SAYS...What's in a Resolution?

2011 is upon us and many businesses are breathing a sigh of relief and turning their attention to better economic times in the near future. How are you doing with your New Year's resolutions? Resolutions aren't only for personal lifestyle changes. In fact, many folks strive to improve their employment talents or diversify their advertising agency offerings. And while a lot of people who make resolutions do break them, research shows that making a resolution is useful. Those people who explicitly make resolutions are 10 times more likely to attain their goals than those who don't. But after 6 months, only 46% of resolutions are maintained. How's that for staying power?

You have to wonder, with statistics being so one-sided toward failure, why we even bother to make resolutions. I think the reason is because we know change is inevitable and in order to survive, we must adapt our thinking.

The recession hit the Valley hard and the face of business and how we market products and services--and ourselves--has changed with it. Hundreds of talented agency folks have been forced into unemployment and didn't necessarily go there by choice. Agencies are adapting their business models, consolidating and changing their offerings, rebranding themselves and putting their best foot forward to cultivate new business in a tight market. In this issue of the AAFMP eNewletter, you'll see how some Valley agencies are reinventing themselves to meet the new year.

AAF Metro Phoenix has made a resolution too - to better serve the needs of the advertising industry with pertinent and tangible offerings.  We're reinventing ourselves to respond to the evolving needs of the advertising community and the unemployed creative talent. As a result, we'll soon be announcing a series of education workshops on key industry and employment topics that our members identified in a recent survey.

Whatever your New Year's resolution, I wish you success and prosperity.  And keep making those resolutions because change is inevitable...

Cheers to your success,
Pamela Loughman
AAFMP President

Net Neutrality Bill Scrapped, For Now
Congressman Henry Waxman, D-Calif., chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee dropped an effort to move new net neutrality legislation in the near future. A new bill considered by the Chairman would have reportedly applied nondiscrimination principles to wire-line broadband but not wireless and directed the Federal Communications Commission to deal with enforcement on a case-by-case basis and not by rulemaking. It would have also prohibited the FCC from reclassifying broadband as a telecommunications service under Title II of the Communications Act, which would have given the agency greater regulatory authority. The effort was halted due to lack of bipartisan support. Chairman Waxman has not ruled out taking up the issue in a lame-duck session after the election.
