Issue: #3December 2010
Greetings!

THE PREZ SAYS...

I've built a 20-year career as a marketing industry professional and I'm proud Pamela Loughmanto live and work here in the Valley. I completely understand the bottom line issues that prompt budget reductions in tough economic times. But I also have another predictable (and instinctual) reaction.... that when purse strings are tightening, advertising professionals should be vigilant to justify the 'right' investments to sustain market share. And AAF Metro Phoenix is a brand worth investing in - particularly now.

I hope you'll consider your ad club membership to be a smart investment in your business and the advertising community. Being part of AAF Metro Phoenix (we're the local ad club!) provides each member with incredible access to networking, industry speakers and upcoming educational workshops at a time when connections and social community have never been more important.

Membership is a small price to pay when you consider that the return on investment includes networking, education, student scholarships, the ADDY competition, expanding your professional reach, and increasing your visibility and business base. Members not only broaden their intellectual and social network but a key aspect of AAFMP is helping young people enter the business. This is done via mentoring and scholarships to foster students and young professionals to help them achieve their aspirations. And let's not forget the social responsibility of helping non-profit organizations to achieve their marketing goals through the AAFMP Media Partnership Program. Some of our greatest accomplishments include assisting the Valley of the Sun United Way, the Desert Botanical Garden, the Arizona Humane Society, and East Valley Adult Resources to reach the public with their very important service messages.

I've met some of the most talented, committed and friendly people through the ad club - initially as a general member, then a board member and now serving as the current AAFMP President. If you're a current member, we look forward to seeing you at more events and mixers in the upcoming months. And please tell us what you like - and what you don't. We're evolving and changing to meet the needs of our members. If you're not yet a member, we invite you to attend an event and perhaps join us in the future in the hopes that your investment will benefit you and your business for years to come.

And if you've got a bit of competitive spirit in you, don't forget to enter the annual ADDY competition, which closes on Wednesday, December 8. Go to www.aafmetrophoenix.com to enter.

Cheers to your success,

Pamela Loughman

AAFMP President

P.S. Don't forget to follow us on Twitter (@AAFMP) for the latest on upcoming events, programs and industry news!

Group files petition with FCC to block cartoon on Nicktoons
The Federal Communications Commission has been asked to make a major change to its policies regarding the use of fictional characters in childrens' programming and commercial matter.

The Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood (CCFC) has filed a petition with the FCC seeking to block a new cartoon on the Nicktoons cable network claiming the show, Zevo-3, is a program length commercial. The show is based on characters that were developed for comics distributed with Skechers shoes, although the shoes play no role in the television show.

AAF Senior Vice President of Government Affairs, Clark Rector, reports the AAF opposes the CCFC Petition because it asks the Commission to repudiate the balanced approach it has applied historically to children's programming and to adopt in its place an amorphous standard that would intrude deeply into the creative and editorial choices of programmers. Read AAF 's position statement on this case.
