SUCCESS STORY
YOUTH CLIENT GETS INTO UNIVERSITY WITH GUIDANCE OF
NIC YOUTH COUNSELLOR
Hadi Wess, a newcomer student has been a client of the Newcomer Information Centre since July 2011. His main goal was to be admitted into a Canadian University by January 2012. Over numerous visits spanning a few months, a NIC Youth counsellor assisted him in various aspects including:
- University program exploration
- English language test options
- Student housing
- Financial aid options
Hadi was successful and has been admitted to the University of Ottawa for January 2012. In a thank you letter, Hadi and writes:
"thank you so much for your help and everything. It was an honor, a pleasure and a privilege dealing with you. I hope we always keep in touch, and whenever you get the chance to visit Ottawa, you know you have a friend here."

Your Legal Rights is a FREE website of legal information for people in Ontario. This site has free, practical, and easy-to-find legal information produced by hundreds of organizations across Ontario. A project of CLEO, the Your Legal Rights site contains the following features:

CITIZENSHIP STUDY GUIDE NOW A MOBILE APP AND EBOOK

The official study guide for the Canadian citizenship test DISCOVER CANADA, is now available as an e-Book, which can be used on a variety of tablets and e-readers and as a mobile application, which includes sample citizenship test questions, is also available for the Android and iPhone. A version for the BlackBerry is coming soon.
Discover Canada is designed to help newcomers practice for their citizenship examination. It promotes to immigrants and Canadian citizens alike a greater understanding of Canada's history, values, symbols and important Canadian institutions, such as Parliament and the Crown. Information on common values such as freedom, democracy, human rights, the rule of law and the equality of men and women are included as well as highlights of the contribution of ethnic and cultural communities in shaping our Canadian identity and the sacrifices made by Canada's veterans for our country.

NEW YEAR, NEW RESOLUTIONS
For many Newcomers welcoming the New Year, 2012 is wiping the slate clean and starting fresh. New Year is also the right time for making resolutions. The Newcomer Information Centre is all geared to help you achieve your goals. Here are a few resolutions that add to your list.
- Be resolute and take the right steps. Set your goals and tap into all available resources right from workshops to networking
- Remember not only to be physically fit but also financially fit by registering for Tax Information Session and Financial Literacy sessions
- Enhance your language skills by being informed about the free language classes such as LINC/OSLT/ELT programs
- Build your network by registering for the Women's Café and Senior's Café
- Get your Credential Evaluation done and learn more about the options and opportunities for internationally educated professionals
- Prepare, pursue and persevere with patience. Succeed, repeat your success and share your success story.
***Now it is your turn to share with us your resolutions for this year. Participate in our writing contest "My Resolutions for 2012".The article should not exceed 200 words and should be submitted to nic@tcet.com by January 20th, 2012. Prizes will be awarded to the top five submissions!

YOUTH X-CEL LEADERSHIP PROGRAM
NIC Youth is pleased to introduce a new leadership and development program- Youth X-Cel for newcomer youth between 13 and 24 years old.
Youth leaders are very influential in shaping the world that future generations will live in. If you are interested in developing your leadership and social skills, then this is the program for you. The program will cover topics such as:
- Youth Employment
- Public Speaking Skills
- Community Service Work
- Stress Management
- Leadership Skills
- Savings & Budgeting
- Entrepreneurship
- MUCH MORE...
The Youth X-CEL leadership program will run once a month from February to July 2012. The program is free of cost and a certificate will be awarded upon completion. Registration is now open.

The Newcomer Information Centre is an innovative program that provides free settlement information to newcomers and residents from a number of accessible locations across Peel and Halton. A smooth transition into Canadian life is critical to success and our program provides accurate referrals to make this happen. Clients work with friendly multi-lingual staff and get confidential counselling about settlement, employment, health, housing, education, language training, immigration issues and more. Counsellors speak Punjabi, Spanish, Arabic, Urdu, Tagalog, Farsi, Mandarin, Cantonese, Romanian, Croatian, Russian, Serbian, French, German, Polish, Swahili, Tamil, Hindi, Bulgarian and Pashto.
Drop by at any of our locations to speak with a counsellor. No appointment is required.
