Understanding the Unwritten Rule of Canadian Society

Either you have no Canadian experience or you are over-qualified? Are you tired of hearing these responses?

When you get this response, it most probably means you need to work on your soft skills!  You may ask why don't the employers tell you directly.

"Canadians, in general, avoid uncomfortable conditions and don't like to offend anyone", says Melissa Magder,  Cross-Cultural Training Consultant.

Some employers may make the effort to tell you the truth, but will 'gift wrap' the message.  That too, at least 3 to 5 layers!  This means that they will say many positive things about you before and after the real message.  As a newcomer to the country, you can easily feel that there is nothing wrong with you and that you are very good.

There are many other rules of the Canadian culture that may be playing a role in your job search.  The good news is that an immigrant engineer, Lionel Laroche, has done extensive research on the subject and has put them in writing in his book "Recruiting, Retaining, and Promoting Culturally different employees".  Even better news is that this book is now availble at each NIC locations for you to read.  You can also order your own copy.
